Despite a rocky start, the Havre High boys basketball team was able to grab a second conference win of the weekend. After defeating the Belgrade Panthers on Friday night, the Central A Blue Ponies hosted the Livingston Rangers at the Havre High gymnasium on Saturday. And in the conference matchup, the Ponies grabbed the 56-54 victory. With the second win of the weekend, the Ponies improved to 4-3 in the conference and 5-6 overall. "We struggled to start," Havre High head coach Andy Smith said. "Giving up 17 in the first...

  • MSU-Northern Basketball Notebook

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

For whatever reason, the Montana State University-Northern Lights just seem to have Carroll College's number in Havre. Following Friday night's 73-54 beat down of the Saints in Havre, the Lights have now topped Carroll six straight times at home. It's a rivalry that has seen both dramatic finishes and blowout victories, as Northern won a stretch of home games against the Saints by four points or less from 200-2009. The last two years, the Lights have sent the Saints packing early. But regardless of the final score, one thing...

  • Lights outlast Bears

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

One win looked easy. But getting a home Frontier Conference sweep was anything but for the Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team. Just one night after the Lights demolished nationally-ranked Carroll College, the Rocky Mountain College Battlin' Bears' made life very difficult for Northern. Still, MSU-N found a way to gut out a 55-52 win over the Bears and take full of advantage of their only home stand in January. But Saturday night's win at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse didn't come without some tense moment,...

  • Skylights crush RMC

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

If one dramatic win wasn't enough, the MSU-Northern women's basketball team decided to make it a perfect two-for-two at home. On Saturday night at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse, the Skylights followed up their thumping of Carroll College on Friday night with a 71-56 thrashing of Rocky Mountain College. The win gave the Skylights back-to-back Frontier Conference victories and a 2-3 record in league play. Northern's win on Friday night came by way of a total team effort, as well as outside input from Samm Schermele and the...

  • Lights drub Saints, again

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

It's never easy to bounce back from a difficult and emotional loss. And it's even more difficult when you're playing arguably the hottest team in the NAIA in an emotional rivalry game. But that's exactly what the Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team did on Friday night. In front of a packed and rowdy MSU-Northern Fieldhouse, the Lights blew away the No. 16 Carroll College Fighting Saints, 73-54 in a pivotal Frontier Conference showdown. Northern turned what was a first-half slug fest, into a route in the...

  • George Ferguson Column: Chinook keeps it going

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

If it seems like the Chinook Sugarbeeters are winning everything right now, it's because they are. In fact, it seems like if it's a sport played with a ball, the Beeters will have success with it. And it was no different Saturday night at the District 9C basketball tournament in Havre where both the Chinook boys and girls captured 9C championships. The Chinook girl's victory over Box Elder was somewhat of a surprise. But examining things closer, maybe it shouldn't be. First, the Beeters had plenty of talent returning this...

  • Lights tumble in NAIA Poll

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team slipped out of the NAIA Top 25 this week, even though Northern earned a hard-fought road split this weekend in the Frontier Conference. The Lights beat Rocky Mountain College on Thursday, but lost to Carroll College Saturday night in Helena. Apparaently, that was enough to send the Lights from No. 16 to out of this week's poll. Northern (8-4, 19-8) is still in a four-way tie for first in the Frontier heading into this weekend's regular season finale. The Lights are...

The high school wrestling season is already in the rearview mirror, but four Hi-Line grapplers had a little more business to take care of this weekend in Great Falls. On Saturday at the Old Gym at Great Falls High, two Blue Ponies and two Beeters competed in the third annual Tournament of Champions, an event which pits state champions and other top wrestlers in each weight from Class AA, A and B-C against each other in a single-elimination format. And all four Hi-Line grapplers showcased their talents Saturday afternoon....

And not only is the dual a big one for the ninth-ranked NAIA Lights, who have been gaining momentum the last few weeks, it will also be an emotional one for Northern senior 157-pounder Tay Todd, who will be honored before the match. Todd is currently in his third and final season with the Lights. He is a three ye...

  • Get to know Biola: Eagles will be tall and stingy

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

At first glance, the Montana State University-Northern Lights and Biola Eagles look like polar opposite basketball teams, and yet they are on a collision course for each other in Kansas City. But under closer examination, the two teams might look different when it comes to the "eye test" but they also have one, hard-nosed similarity. Both teams use a combination of accurate shooting and tough defense to win games. The 19th-ranked Lights (24-8) have hung their hat on defense and deadly, accurate 3-point shooting all season...

  • California Dreamin' at Northern

Daniel Horton, Havre Daily News sports editor

It's hard to find two states that are as diverse and unique as Montana and California. Sure, they aren't too far apart on the map, but besides California being the third largest state and Montana being the fourth largest state, do they really have anything in common? At first glance, the answer is no. With well over 36 million people filling up the state of California, the Golden State is typically well known for Los Angeles, Hollywood movies, warm weather, beaches, shopping and traffic. And an outside look at Montana, with...

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Havre High girls basketball team needed a win. A win would give the Blue Ponies some momentum as they gear up for the postseason. And they got that win on their last night in Havre. Friday night at the Havre High gymnasium, the Blue Pony girls sent seniors Paighton Gilman and Christina Mack out with a much-needed victory as HHS beat Conrad 39-31 in a nonconference game. Friday night's victory, on what is always an emotional night, also improved HHS to 4-13 as the Ponies prepare for one last regular season game this...

  • We can learn from HHS Native American families

Letter to the Editor — Jean Watson

We can learn from HHS Native American families Editor: On Monday night, I attended the basketball games at Havre High School. It was Senior Night. During the senior presentations ceremony, the Native American families presented all the senior parents, the coaches and Mr. Murphy with beautiful blankets. They also gave a gift to the other seniors. I was very touched. It was so thoughtful of them. They also praised and thanked our Havre High School and Blue Pony Team. I think we can all learn from this. Jean Watson, Havre...

  • Tell Legislature this isn’t what you signed up for

Letter to the Editor — Rachel Lopez

Tell Legislature this isn't what you signed up for Editor: As a taxpayer and voter in Hill County, I find it impossible to believe that the majority of voters in Montana are aware of the extreme ideas that are circulating in the Montana State Legislature at the present time. We all live busy lives, and have many claims on our attention. Many people find politics boring, upsetting, and/or feel powerless regarding their ability to make a difference. It is natural for people to crave and seek solutions to problems that are satis...

  • Lights head south for round two with Argos

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

All that stands between the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team and the postseason is one last dual. But it's a big one. Tonight in Great Falls, the No. 8 Lights will do battle with arch-rival and sixth-ranked UGF at 7 at the McLaughlin Center in Great Falls. And the Lights are expecting the battle of their lives, considering a short-handed Northern team forged a 24-24 tie with UGF back in November in Havre. But since that tie, the Lights have kept on improving and that means UGF knows its in for another battle...

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Harlem Wildcats and Chinook Sugarbeeters have found their own successes at recent Class B-C state wrestling tournaments. But this weekend's tourney in Hamilton could be historic for both programs. Chinook is gunning for not only more individual glory, but the Beeters are looking to win their fourth straight Class C trophy in the B-C division. Chinook has had plenty of success in the past and has won the first three Class C-only titles, all the while competing with the top teams in all of Class B-C. Meanwhile, Harlem bring...

  • Lights' roll to K.C. went right through Carroll

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

HELENA — A well-oiled machine. A team in every sense of the word. A family. There's plenty of clichés to go around when you talk about the Montana State University Northern Lights right now. But one cliché that holds true above all others following Northern emphatic 79-70 win in Tuesday night's Frontier Conference championship at Carroll College is, the Lights are on a roll. Perhaps they are, in the zone. Whatever the case may be, the Lights are rolling right into Kansas City, and on Tuesday night they rolled right thr...

Thursday through Saturday, the Lights will be in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for the 2011 NAIA National Tournament, and while Northern brings an No. 8 ranking into this weekend's season finale, Thivierge believes...

  • It's playoff time for the Lights

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team needed two monumental wins this past weekend in order to solidify its standing in the Frontier Conference. And while Westminster and Lewis-Clark State didn't stand in Northern's way when it came to capturing a share of the Frontier's regular season championship, wins over the powerful Griffins and Warriors were only part of the battle. Now the No. 22 Lights (21-8) turn their attention to the postseason and Rocky Mountain College. Northern hosts the Battlin' Bears...

  • Republic not the same as democracy

Letter to the Editor — Robert Fegan

Editor: I can't take it anymore! All this crap about will of the people. We don't live in a democracy, at least at the federal level of government. In spite of what you might think or even what the president says, we are a constitutional republic. The word "democracy" does not appear in the text of the U. S. Constitution or any of the 50 states that make up our republic. Some political scientists give our republican form of government the sub-category of a representative democracy. I have found it to be almost a 50/50 split...
