George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor-

Former Havre Blue Pony Sarah Keller (Walter) and her husband, Greg Walter, will be hosting a 5K run on Saturday, May 15 in Billings to raise money for a cause very close to the family's heart. Ryan's Run is name of the event, and it's in honor of the couples son Ryan Paul Walter who they lost to SIDS — Sudden Infant Death Syndrome — 65 days after his birth. The run, in honor of Ryan, will raise money for the SIDS Foundation and they are donating all proceeds to that foundation. The race will start at 8 a.m. at Rimrock Wes...

  • Harlem girls season ends at Northern B

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

It's been a great season for the Harlem girls basketball team. Unfortunately, the Wildcats' division is just too tough. Harlem (11-12) suffered losses to top-ranked Fairfield, 69-30 on Thursday and Shelby, 48-34 on Friday to exit the Northern B Divisional in Malta. In the loss to Fairfield, the eventual Northern B champion, the Wildcats got 15 points from Jacinda Fuller and another 13 from Hyapatia Getten. Against Shelby in the loser-out round, Harlem was led by Maurvella Fuller's 10 points. Fairfield 69, Harlem 30 Fairfield...

  • Warburton out of line

Letter to the Editor — Tom Larson

Editor: Well, dear friends in Havre and along the Hi-Line, we opted for change last election, and we sure got it. We forgot what political ideology had nearly brought our nation to its economic knees and put them back in power. Now we see more debacles rising to the surface as a very narrow political viewpoint once again seeks to bend our lives into its blind ideology. One must wonder at Rep. Warburton's insight as she and her fellow Republicans offer legislation that actually does very little to provide new jobs for Montana,...

  • Thanks for wrestling coverage

Letter to the Editor — Judy Handstede

Editor: I would like to thank the Havre Daily News and Montana State University-Northern for including my grandson's wrestling accomplishments throughout your publications. Myles attended Havre High School, and he is a sophomore at UGF (Great Falls). Myles has now completed two successful wrestling seasons, and I am very proud of him. I thank the UGF wrestling staff, the Havre wrestling programs, his parents, and the many people who have supported Myles' wrestling passion. I appreciate the cheers from Myles' home crowd while...

  • Lights come up short at Carroll

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

If the Montana State University-Northern Lights were in a tightly contested Frontier Conference race before Saturday night's showdown with Carroll College, now they're in a fight to the finish. On Saturday night in Helena, the No. 16 Lights lost to the Carroll College Fighting Saints 56-47, meaning Northern split its a last two Frontier road games of the regular season. The Lights beat Rocky Mountain College on Thursday night in Billings. The split also drops the Lights back into a four-way tie with Carroll, UM-Western and...

  • Skylights shock Carroll in Helena

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team was down after three straight Frontier Conference losses. Apparently, the Skylights were far from out though. On Saturday night, a struggling Skylights' team went into Helena and stormed their way past the Carroll College Fighting Saints 70-54 for a surprise road win and a little redemption. Northern lost a heartbreaking game on Thursday night at Rocky Mountain College but salvaged an important split on its final road trip with the win at Carroll. Saturday night's...

  • Skylights hope to regroup at RMC, Carroll

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

It's been a season of highs and lows for the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team. And right now, the Skylights are trying to come back up from a low. Northern enters this weekend's road trip at Rocky Mountain College, tonight in Billings and Carroll College, Saturday night in Helena, coming off a rare two-game home stand in which the Skylights were swept on their home floor. And with how difficult the Frontier is on a nightly basis, getting back up from that low won't be easy, especially against two...

  • First-place Lights hit the road

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team is ranked higher than any other Frontier Conference team right now. And the No. 16 Lights are alone atop the conference standings. But if one lesson has been learned through 10 league games this season, it's that things can change in a hurry. And that's what the Lights (18-7, 7-3) will try to guard against when they take on league foes Rocky Mountain College tonight in Billings and Carroll College Saturday in Helena. The Lights may be on top of the Frontier right...

  • Box Elder leads a host of talented teams

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Five teams, only one semifinal and just three days, that's the new-look District 9C girls basketball tournament. But this year's version, which kicks off tonight at 5 at the Havre High gymnasium will be just as intense as any. And although the 9C has changed over time, the excitement and the level of basketball hasn't. The 2011 9C girls tournament will feature some of the best basketball teams in the area, and it starts with the Box Elder Bears (17-1), who have a chance to repeat as district champions this weekend. Box...

  • George Ferguson Column: Huse has been a credit to coaching at MSU-N

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Time-and-time again during the course of the great run the Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team has been on this season, I've heard fans refer to the Lights as unselfish. Fans, coaches, players alike, unselfish basketball season to be the theme surrounding this year's Northern team. It's that type of play which has carried the Lights to a Frontier Conference championship and a berth in this week's NAIA national tournament. And while it's true that the Lights certainly play team basketball, the word unselfis...

  • Kansas City here they come

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

From the beginning of October to the day the Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team boards the plane to head to Kansas City for the 2011 NAIA national tournament, there's been one word used to describe why the Lights have been so successful. Family. And it's an interesting word considering back in August very few of the Lights new each other. After all, Northern didn't return a single starter to this year's 24-8, Frontier Conference championship team. In fact, only two Lights, sophomore Devin Jackson and...

  • Orediggers get by Skylights

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team was looking to bounce back from a heartbreaking loss to UM-Western on Friday night. Instead, Saturday night brought more frustration as the Skylights lost to high-powered Montana Tech 76-68 at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse. The loss to Tech meant a rare sweep at home for MSU-N and the Skylights fell to 3-7 in league play and 12-14 overall. Northern didn't play poorly against the Orediggers, but the Skylights couldn't overcome a monsterous 32-point effort from Tech...

  • Lights clobber Tech

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

It would have been easy for the Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team to let down after Friday night's thrilling win over UM-Western. Instead, the Lights were focused and dominant. Northern took control of the Frontier Conference by thumping Montana Tech 60-38 Saturday night at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse. Following the sweep of Western and Tech, the No. 25 Lights stand at 7-3 in the Frontier and all alone in first place with four games to go. "It would have been very easy to not be as focused tonight,...

  • Northern Rodeo Teams perform in Bozeman

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern Rodeo Team got its spring season off to a good start over the weekend. The Lights and Skylights were in Bozeman for one of the biggest rodeo's of the spring, hosted by Montana State University. The Bozeman rodeo saw teams from Northern, UGF, UM-Western, Montana State and the University of Montana, as well as others from the region compete over the course of three days. In the first rodeo, Northern's Dennis Barta won the average in steer wrestling over three days. Barta placed first in the...

  • Legislation doesn’t trump research

Letter to the Editor — Cameron Parham

Legislation doesn't trump research Editor: Did you ever think maybe medical and psychological research costs too much? Apparently the Montana Legislature agrees. They can just pass a law that marijuana is a good treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder and, BAM, it is so! Of course, like many sedating drugs, marijuana can sedate you enough that you care less about your troubles. But a real treatment of any problem has goals such as emotional healing, healthy relationships and the ability to work. Not just being too...

  • Eminent domain bill should concern land owners

Letter to the Editor — Cindy Webber

Eminent domain bill should concern land owners Editor: As a landowner I am always wary of eminent domain legislation. I feel property owners need to take a close look at House Bill 198. Eminent domain involves the taking of property for a "greater" public good. This bill has a narrow motivation; however, like all legislation passed into law, it will effect landowner rights for years to come. HB 198 was created in an attempt to solve an issue for the Montana Alberta Tie Line. MATL is a corporate entity wishing to construct...

  • Learning experience: Lights finish 10th

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

With high expectations can come even bigger disappointments. And in some cases, that's exactly the story of the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team's 2011 NAIA national tournament. The Lights took a group of 10 wrestlers, including two top-ranked individuals into the national championships this past weekend in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, but came away with a disappointing 10th-place finish. Northern did crown three NAIA All-Americans and saw Havre Blue Pony great Evan Hinebauch win his first national championship, but...

  • MSU-Northern men ready to finish the job

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team has been as successful as any Frontier Conference men's program inside the border of Montana over the last nine years. And that success was never more evident than on Saturday night at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse, as the Lights beat UM-Western 72-60 in the conference semifinals in front of capacity crowd. The semifinal win was something only one other Lights' team in Huse's nine years at Northern had been able to do. The Lights crushed Carroll College in the...

  • National Champion: Havre's Evan Hinebauch captures an NAIA title for MSU-N

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Former Havre Blue Pony Evan Hinebauch is a big-match wrestler. After all, the Montana State University-Northern junior has already been in an NAIA national championship match as a freshman, and has three Class A state championships to his credit in high school. But on Saturday night in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, when Hinebauch stepped on the mat against UGF's Michael French for the final time in their storied rivalry, the former Blue Pony great was in this biggest match of his life. And to no one's surprise, Hinebauch came through...

  • Lights send Dawgs' to the pound

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

In every postseason basketball game, there's always some tense, nervous moments. And the Montana State University-Northern Lights certainly had their share in their Frontier Conference semifinal game against the UM-Western Bulldogs. But when it mattered the most, and with a chance at a Frontier championship hanging in the balance, the No. 22 Lights were at their best. Northern defeated the Bulldogs 72-60 in front of a capacity crowd Saturday night at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse, and in the process, advanced to the...

  • Stars advance at Northern B

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Rocky Boy Stars are not just the defending Class B state champions, but the defending Northern B state champs as well. And they got their Northern B title defense off to a good start Thursday in Shelby. In the opening round of the 2011 Northern, considered the most difficult tournament in all of Montana high school basketball, the Stars took care of the Glasgow Scotties 62-40, setting up a semifinal date with No. 1-ranked Wolf Point tonight. Glasgow stayed with Stars for a quarter, but then Rocky Boy turned on the jets. T...

  • George Ferguson Column: Basketball fans don't want to miss this one

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

If you like college basketball, if you like postseason intensity, then you better not miss Saturday night. And if you like budding rivalries, then you're in for even more of a treat if you happen to get to the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse for Saturday night's Frontier Conference semifinal game between the 22nd-ranked Montana State University-Northern Lights and the UM-Western Bulldogs. First and foremost, games just don't come with much more on the line. Both the Lights (21-8) and Bulldogs (21-8) are fighting to get into the NAIA...

  • Lights in ninth entering Day Two

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

It wasn't the start the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team was looking for, but never-the-less, the Lights will battle on. Northern finished the first day at the 2011 NAIA national wrestling tournament in ninth place overall with 16.5 points. Interestingly, the Lights are tied with rival UGF for ninth. However, MSU-N has just two wrestlers still with a chance to win national championships this weekend. As expected, former Havre Blue Pony and top-ranked 184-pounder Evan Hinebauch blasted his way into the...

  • Round 2: Lights brace for Bulldogs

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team played nearly flawless basketball in Wednesday night's Frontier Conference quarterfinal thrashing of the Rocky Mountain College Bears. In their 91-68 win, the Lights were better than 50 percent from the field and from the 3-point-line and missed just two free throws all night. Northern also won the rebounding battle, the turnover battle and played hard-nosed defense all night long. In short, it doesn't get much better. But the win didn't guarantee the No. 22 Lights...

  • Frustration at the legislative session

Letter to the Editor — J. W. Westman

Frustration at the legislative session Editor: I'm frustrated and angered how this legislative session is going. We are avid hunters, anglers and ardent conservationists. Who sent these legislators to Helena to cheapen, trample and make a chicanery of our outdoor traditions? The hunters and anglers I talk to are equally frustrated and angry. What a long list of special interest legislation. We've seen efforts to steal our hunting and fishing dollars, several attempts to disembowel the FWP Commission, limit Fish, Wildlife and...
