Threats have no place in public discourse Editor: What do we have in common? Well, we both call Havre, Mont., home. Aside from that geographical fact, it would be very difficult to find much of anything for which we agree. Steelers vs. Packers nope. Taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood, we couldn't be further apart. Whether or not the 2000 presidential election was decided fairly, definitely not. Some very disturbing news from Helena this week did, however, make the two of us realize that we have one unwavering principle...
Social host ordinance is the right choice Editor: Kids report that most of the time they get alcohol from "social" sources like older friends, friends' parents, etc. We know sometimes they are getting it from retail businesses, too, but with compliance checks now, that should start to diminish. Our youth deserve the community's support to do the right thing for their health and safety and if we can begin to eliminate social sources of alcohol, it will give another tool to show youth that their neighbors, parents friends want...
Frontier Conference men's basketball games don't get any bigger than when the Montana State University-Northern Lights play host to the Westminster Griffins. They don't get any bigger that is, unless the conference championship is at stake, as was the case in Northern's dramatic 64-58 win over the Griffins Friday night at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse. The Lights needed a win over Westminster in order to set up having a chance to claim at least a share of the regular season Frontier title on Saturday night – and that's e...
The Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team suffered an emotionally devastating loss to Westminster College on Friday night. In fact, it doesn't get any more difficult than getting beat at the buzzer. Then the Skylights had to turn around and say goodbye to senior greats Samm Schermele and Taylor Keller before Saturday night's regular season finale against No. 10 Lewis-Clark State. And if that wasn't emotional enough, Northern then suffered its second straight heartbreaking loss to boot. On Saturday night...
The Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team got a huge win when the Lights knocked off the Westminster Griffins on Friday night. On Saturday night however, the Lights needed one more. In order to ensure the Lights would tie for the frontier Conference regular season championship, they had to beat Lewis-Clark State in the regular season finale, and while it took an extra five minutes, the Lights got the job done. Northern claimed its second Frontier regular season title in four years by beating LC State 70-65...
If you watch college basketball on ESPN, or the NBA each and every night, you'd hardly know that basketball was invented to be a team sport. Today's game features one-on-one basketball more than ever before, and it's certainly entertaining. I won't lie, I like high-flying dunks, long 3-pointers and fast-break basketball that is today's game. It's fun to watch, there's no doubt about that. But in its purest form, the game of basketball is played with passing, strategy and defense, and this year's Montana State University-North...

She led the Frontier Conference and was eighth in the NAIA in scoring this...
A winter storm this week proved that the snow isn't going without a fight. But never-the-less, it's time for the Montana State University-Northern football team to hit the practice field. The Lights are hoping to begin spring drills today, one day after they were scheduled to start the first of 16 practices and scrimmages over the course of the nest month. And Northern head coach Mark Samson said this spring is going to be critical to the progression of what was the youngest team in the Frontier Conference last fall. "We have...
GREAT FALLS — To say the Chinook girls basketball team is on a roll right now would be an understatement of epic proportions. First the Beeters had never won a 9C tournament before — until last Saturday night. Then, they had never played in a Northern C Divisional before — until Wednesday afternoon. Now, they have a win in the Northern C. On Wednesday afternoon, in the first round of the Northern C tournament at the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls, the Sugarbeeters captured a narrow win over favored Winifred-Roy, 43-42, adv...
Editor: Planned Parenthood of Montana has been my primary care provider for the last 13 years. I've gone to them for contraception, annual exams, cancer screenings, anxiety and depression issues, digestion problems and more. Family planning services around the country operate on Title X funding. That funding goes toward the services I just listed. Title X funding is never used for abortion care, and yet this particular funding which provides life-saving, preventative care is exactly what conservatives and the anti-choice...
The Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team returned home from Kansas City and the NAIA men's national tournament on Sunday afternoon, their magical season over with. But it will be almost impossible for the Lights, their fans and anyone else who witnessed it, to forget what Northern accomplished this season. There's an old adage when it comes to postseason sports, and it goes something like, unless you win your very last game of the year, you're going to be disappointed. And that may sum up the Lights, as...
January is going by fast, and that means things are getting very serious when it comes to high school girls basketball on the Hi-Line. This week marks the halfway point in the 2010-11 season, and as teams turn for the home stretch, every game is magnified. On Friday night, the Chinook Sugarbeeters grabbed an important road win over the District 8C Geraldine Tigers. The Beeters edged the Tigers 38-34 via a 15-8 third-quarter run. Makayla Farmer led a balanced Chinook attack with eight points, while Taryn Norby and Haley Swank...
The Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team drew the last game of the two-day first round in the 2011 NAIA national men's tournament. The Lights also drew the Biola Eagles, and the Eagles made sure the last game of the first round was also Northern's last game of the season. Despite a heartfelt second half comeback, the No. 19 Lights fell to the No. 13 Biola Eagles 59-48 in a defensive battle Thursday night at the NAIA men's national tournament inside Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City. The loss was the last...
There's a lot of pageantry, a lot of excitement and even some distractions that come with reaching the NAIA national basketball tournament. For many teams, it's out of the normal routine in which they are accustomed to. But tonight in Kansas City, all that will go away for the Montana State University-Northern Lights, and all that's left is 40 minutes of basketball. The 19th-ranked Lights (24-8) finally open play at the 75th NAIA national tournament tonight at 8:45 M.S.T. against 13th-ranked and 13th-seeded Biola University...

The Havre North Stars American Legion baseball team already had two wins over the Great Falls Stallions heading into Sunday's Northern District doubleheader in Havre. And last weekend in Great Falls, the wins over the Stallions looked easy. However, two more wins was anything but. On Sunday afternoon at Legion Field, the North Stars made their home debut by beating the Stallions twice, once in a game that had to go extra innings, and the other a game that the North Stars didn't even need the seventh frame. But both were...
An already outstanding recruiting class just got better for the Montana State University-Northern football team. Earlier this week, Northern head coach Mark Samson announced the signing of 10 more new Lights, including a Havre High standout. Heading the list of five in-state signees and five out-of-state players is Blue Pony senior Corderro Strickland. Strickland was a Central A All-Conference wide receiver and cornerback at HHS, and could play either position for the Lights. He has been at Havre High for three years and has...
Evan Hinebauch has always wrestled like he has something to prove. He's always wrestled like he's on a mission. In fact, the former Havre high standout has always wrestled with 100 percent heart, courage and determination. He takes no wrestling match for granted. And those are just some of the intangibles which carried Hinebauch to his first collegiate national championship, which he captured last Saturday night when he beat longtime rival Michael French of the University of Great Falls for the NAIA 184-pound championship in...
Honored to be part of Youth of the Year event Editor: Last week, I was honored to co-host the Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year event in Helena. One of the three finalists was our own Shawna Cary of Havre. Although she was ill and unable to attend in person, Shawna competed by video, and she did an amazing job! Please congratulate Shawna. Even though the judges ultimately picked a different candidate, I was extremely proud of the great job Shawna did and how wonderfully she represented Havre. The sky is the limit for...
For the second straight year, former Havre high wrestling standout Myles Mazurkiewicz has earned NAIA All-American honors. Mazurkiewicz finished off his 2011 NAIA national tournament by finishing in fifth place at 141 pounds on Saturday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The UGF sophomore garnered a second-place finish at the national tournament a year ago. After enduring injury problems this season, Mazurkiewicz, who moved up to 141 pounds this season, came into the tournament unseeded and ranked 8th nationally. He ran into rival Tommy...
SHELBY — The Rocky Boy Stars are used to big games. After all, the Stars were the defending Class B state champions coming into Friday night's big game with the Wolf Point Wolves. However, when it came down to big shots, it was the Wolves who made them count. Friday night in Shelby, the top-ranked and undefeated Wolves got a pair of 3-pointers from Mechiah Zilkoski in the final minute to lift Wolf Point to a 49-47 win over Rocky Boy in the Northern B semifinals. The victory pushed Wolf Point into the championship game w...
The spring sports season is under way, but there was still basketball to be played on the Hi-Line last week. Last Thursday in Rudyard, the annual Senior Classic, hosted by North Star High School was played. The games feature senior talent from around the Hi-Line, including District 9C and 10C stars. In the girls game, the Dark Team, led by North Star's Bridjour Han edged the Light Team 40-38. Han scored 16 points and was named the game's MVP. Angie Christiaens of Sunburst added 11 points and Mariah Gullickson of Big Sandy...
When it comes to the voting for the annual Havre Daily News All Hi-Line Girls Basketball Team, choices can never be easy. There is, and always has been a plethora of great girls basketball players in the area, and the 2010-11 was no different. This year's team has nine newcomers and only three repeat performers. By grade, it's also the most balanced list in the six years of the honor. Every grad is represented on the list with five seniors, four juniors, one sophomore and two freshman making the cut. The two freshman are the...
It might have been an up-and-down season for the Havre High girls softball team, but the year didn't come without some outstanding individual performances by several Pony players. The Central A released its 2011 All-Conference list on Wednesday afternoon and four Havre High players made the cut. Leading the way for Havre is sophomore pitcher Davee McLeod who was named Central A First-Team All-Conference. McLeod started every game for the Ponies on the mound this season and carried the pitching workload. She also was one of...
