For the third year in a row, weather may play a big role in Havre's High two-day trip to the Great Falls Invitational tennis tournament. On this week last year, the Great Falls tournament, which is two days worth of challenging duals, was called off due to a huge snowstorm which hit the area. Fast forward one year, and snow is again predicted to hit Great Falls, leaving HHS's status for this weekend up in the air. The Blue Ponies are slated to dual Bozeman and Billings Senior on Friday and Billings West and Cut Bank on...
Over the weekend, six more games were played on the road to the Havre Youth Baseball Association Babe Ruth championship. Friday through Sunday Legion Field in Havre was the home of the Babe Ruth tournament, where Chinook, Rocky Boy, Optimist, Wells Fargo and Northern Montana Hospital all competed in the double elimination tournament. And after the baseball-packed weekend was finally in the books, it was the Optimist ball club that came away with the No. 1 spot. Sunday, in the championship game, Optimist defeated Wells Fargo...
The Havre High boys and girls track teams don't have a lot of state experience leading the Blue Ponies this season, but with a combined 14 athletes making the trip this weekend, they are hoping that changes. Today and Saturday the Central A Ponies will take part in the Class A state track meet in Laurel. John Perrodin headlines the Ponies roster as the only returning athlete to have placed at the state tournament last season. Perrodin placed sixth in both the 110 and 300 hurdles a season ago, and will get another go around...
The Havre High softball program isn't one of the elite programs in the state. Not yet anyway. The Blue Ponies have housed a softball team for only five seasons now; still a baby in the world of girls fastpitch softball and in sports in general. But despite the disadvantages of going through growing pains early on, the Ponies are well on their way to making their name statewide. "This year I think is going to be the year," Havre High Athletic Director Dennis Murphy said. "I feel real confident with our kids this year that...
Over the last seven years, no high school tennis team has been more consistent at the Class A state meet than the Havre Blue Ponies. Havre High boys and girls teams have brought back trophies from the state tournament seven straight times, including last year when the HHS girls captured the 2009 state championship, while the Pony boys finished second. So, while many might have called this season a rebuilding year in Havre, don't be surprised that the Ponies are poised to improve upon their already impressive streak. The Blue...

It must have been a strange feeling for the Havre High boys and girls tennis teams to come home from the 2009 Central A Divisional tennis tournament without any hardware. This weekend in Livingston and Bozeman, however, the Blue Ponies corrected that situation. The Pony boys and girls battled weather and three full days of tennis, and they found plenty of individual and team success along the way. The Havre boys captured their 14th divisional title in the last 15 years, scoring 47 points to easily outdistance second-place...

On Saturday, the Ponies will face four Central A programs at the Belgrade track meet in Belgrade. Anaconda as well as a handful of local Class C and B schools will also be in attendance, but the Ponies are focused on Belgrade, Livingston,...

Football or wrestling? That's the question which Havre High senior and athletic standout Kent Pattison had to ask himself before committing to a college. The Montana State University- Northern football team has already been in the weight room and on the field in preparation for the 2010 season. The Northern offense and defense faced off in competition and both sides had their pluses and minuses. "We still need work," Lights' quarterback Derek Lear said. "You could...

The Montana State University- Northern Lights football team has been hard at work this off season. And now, smack dab in the midst of two-a-day practices, the Lights look to be well on their way to a positive turnaround after a season a year ago that left players, coaches and fans with a bad taste in their mouths. Senior Casey Varner will be a threeyear starter as a Lights safety, and is also positive after what he has seen this summer. "A lot of good things have happened this summer," Varner said. "And I like the...

For the last four years it's been school, volleyball practice, choir and then homework. Or depending on what time of year it is, it's been school, track practice, choir and then homework. And in the busiest of times, Havre High senior Karla Hellegaard may have even added another round of choir practice or performances to her demanding daily routine as a very active member in the St. Jude's Catholic Church. To say the least, Hellegaard's high school career hasn't been a cakewalk. And though she is keen on the fact that her rig...
