It has been a while since the Havre North Stars American Legion baseball club had their last home stand, but the return home doesn’t make the competition any easier. Tonight, the North Stars will return to Legion Field in Havre for one non-conference game against the Great Falls Bolts at 6 p.m. The North Stars will remain at home for a conference doubleheader on Sunday as well. Sunday, the North Stars will host Medicine Hat, game one will begin at 1 p.m. But remaining in conference play, the North Stars will also face a...
If you were never able to see Havre High’s Thurman Holdsclaw play football, you missed a lot of great performances on the gridiron. His two-year prep career went by in a flash, but fortunately for football fans, while his prep career has come and gone, his collegiate career is just beginning. In just a short amount of time, Holdsclaw was able to get on a lot of schools' watch lists. As a junior, Holdsclaw’s first season of high school football, he was named First-Team All-Conf...
LAUREL — After the conclusion of yet another Class C state track and field meet, it should come as no surprise that many area athletes had another standout weekend of competition. A second consecutive girls’ state title was on the line for the North Star Knights. And while the milestone wasn’t reached, the Knights did help lead the way for the success found by the Hi-Line teams and individuals that competed Friday and Saturday in Laurel. Superior had a strong weekend, captu...
Weather has played a role in almost everything the Havre High boys and girls tennis teams have done this season. So it was no surprise that weather dominated the headlines of the 2013 Class A state tennis tournament. Eight Blue Pony netters were in Polson and Ronan over the weekend, and wound up competing in a wet, chilly and lengthy Class A state tennis tournament. The tournament got under way Thursday morning and didn’t wrap up until Saturday afternoon. And in between was p...
LAUREL — The best of the best in Class A track and field were all present at the Class A state track meet in Laurel over the weekend. And while the Havre High boys and girls track teams didn’t make a run at team titles, the Blue Ponies did get a handful of individual placers, as well as saw athletes turn in personal best times and distances over the two days of competition. Laurel hosted the state meet Friday and Saturday. In boys’ action, it was Whitefish which took the team title with 78 points, while Billings Centr...
Heading into the weekend, I think the verdict was still out on the decision to begin having a Central A divisional softball tournament. I had heard arguments for and against the idea. But after sitting through a lot of great Class A softball on Friday and Saturday in Havre, I don’t think the tournament could have played out any better. Yes, watching the Havre High Blue Ponies take one of the top three spots, and punch their ticket to state after a 3-5 regular season conference record, would have been the icing on the cake, bu...
With the first annual Central A softball tournament taking place over the weekend in Havre, one thing is clear, the Central A will be well-represented at the Class A state tournament this weekend in Belgrade. Friday and Saturday, the Lewistown Golden Eagles, Livingston Rangers, Belgrade Panthers, Havre Blue Ponies and Browning Indians, all battled it out for a spot in the Class A state tournament. The inaugural Central A tournament was played at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Softball Complex in Havre, where the Panthers were...
It was clear that the Havre High softball program was hungry for a Class A state tournament berth, especially near the end of the season as the Blue Ponies played their best softball. But as the Central A conference proved to be a very tight race, the Ponies were left out yet again. The Ponies finished the regular season with a 3-5 conference record, and as the No. 4 seed heading into the first annual Central A divisional softball tournament. The newly decided-on divisional tournament now meant the Ponies had a shot at...
The divisional track meet means the last opportunity to push kids into the Class A state meet, and the Havre High track and field teams had a good number of kids step up. Competing in Livingston Friday and Saturday at the Central A divisional meet, the Blue Ponies were well-represented. And though neither team earned a team title, a lot of individual athletes have a lot to be proud of, with just the state meet remaining this season. Belgrade has the numbers that make it very hard to contend with in the Class A ranks, and the...
A year ago, the Havre High boys and girls tennis teams took just four total players to the Class A state tournament. Fast forward one year, and the Blue Ponies doubled that total following a highly successful Central A Divisional tournament. From Thursday afternoon to Saturday evening the Ponies battled the elements and tough teams from Lewistown, Livingston and Anaconda as well as having to move the tournament from Lewistown to Great Falls Saturday in the 2013 Central A meet. The Havre boys successfully defended the Central...
Davee McLeod isn’t just any Havre High senior to navigate through the Blue Pony softball program the last four years. Yes, McLeod has been a permanent varsity fixture since her freshman season. And yes, as a freshman, McLeod was a key player in the Ponies’ last state tournament run. But taking into account what McLeod has done for the program over the last four years, all that is just the tip of the iceberg. As a Pony softball player, McLeod has proven her talents. She is a two-time Academic All-State award honoree, as wel...
Local track and field programs are one step closer to the state meet, and area athletes performed very well at the Northern C divisional track meet. Thursday in Great Falls, Chinook, North Star, Chester/J-I, Box Elder, and Big Sandy all competed at the Ralph Halverson Northern C Divisional track meet. Athletes competed for coveted spots at next weekend’s Class C state meet, as only the top five from each event advanced. In the boys’ field, the 8C Belt Huskies captured the team title with 90 points. The Chinook Sug...
If the 2013 softball season had ended, the Havre High softball team would be done. But fortunately for the Central A Blue Ponies, they get one last shot at making the Class A state softball tournament. The Ponies finished the conference portion of the season with a 3-5 record, but as the No. 4 team. And with only the top three teams making the state tournament, HHS will hopefully utilize the conference’s first divisional tournament to turn their luck around, and make the state tournament. The Central A divisional t...
The season has been long, and another growing experience for the Havre High track and field team this year, but with the post season here, all the hard work will hopefully pay off. After two weeks off, the Central A Blue Pony boys and girls will compete at the Central A divisional tournament in Livingston. The tournament runs today and Saturday, beginning at this afternoon at 4 p.m. Saturday action will resume at 10 a.m. Like every team, the Ponies have had their share of ups and downs this season. They have a lot of talented...
The weekend plans for the Havre high softball team included winning a couple of games, and gaining some momentum heading into the postseason. And, after a clean sweep of the competition, the Blue Ponies accomplished both. In nonleague action, the Central A Ponies faced four teams while attending the Laverne Combo Softball Invitational in Butte. The Ponies went 4-0 Friday and Saturday. Friday, the Ponies started the weekend with a 5-1 win over Corvallis. The Ponies then followed with a dominating 18-2 win over Thompson Falls....
The Havre High boys and girls tennis teams had work left to do before this week’s Central A Divisional tournament. And the Blue Ponies completed that work Saturday at the Lewistown Invitational. Havre faced off against Central A rivals Livingston, Lewistown and Anaconda, as well as took on Butte Central Saturday in dual action, and with mixed results, according to HHS head coach George Ferguson. “There was a lot of importance on the Lewistown Invite and the kids knew that going in,” Ferguson said. “We needed to be at our bes...
One weekend, four duals, and a few matches is all that stands between the Havre High tennis teams and the postseason. Thursday, Havre will travel to Lewistown for the Central A Divisional, but before the Ponies get there, they’ll head to Lewistown Saturday for the annual Lewistown Invitational. And the dual-format tournament is the biggest on Havre’s schedule according to veteran Blue Pony head coach George Ferguson. “We play bigger events with Class AA schools and maybe a few tougher teams during the season,” Ferguso...
It is still early in the American Legion baseball season, and the competition is only going to get tougher from here for the Havre North Stars baseball program. The North Stars dropped three games to a very good Redbirds team out of Calgary last weekend and are now prepared to take on a very tough team out of Great Falls. Sunday the North Stars will face the hosting Great Falls Electrics in Great Falls in a double-header beginning at noon. The doubleheader is the Northern District opener for both squads. Havre has yet to face...
Chinook won yet another boys title at the annual District 9C track and field meet, and the Sugarbeeters did so in dominating fashion. Wednesday, the Havre Middle School track welcomed in the 9C track programs from across the Hi-Line. And it was the Beeters who claimed the No. 1 spot with an impressive 210 team points. The North Star Knights followed with 131 for a second-place finish, while the Box Elder Bears brought just five athletes and still managed 55 points and a third-place finish. The Big Sandy Pioneers were fourth...
Heading into the last weekend of the regular season, the Havre High softball team knows the importance of playing well at this point. The Blue Ponies have just four games left before they host the Central A divisional tournament in Havre, and four wins is just what they are looking for. Friday and Saturday, the Ponies will be in Butte for the Butte Central Invitational. HHS will face four nonconference opponents, but will treat this like a conference weekend. The Ponies will face Class B Thompson Falls, Class A Corvallis,...
The North Star Knights have truly become a dominant force in the District 9C track and field ranks. And this season, with another 9C track meet in the books, the trend continued. Wednesday afternoon brought the District 9C track meet to the Havre Middle School. And with some of the state’s best athletes in attendance, it was another good showing for local competitors. The Knights captured their seventh straight 9C title, besting the field with 242 team points. The Chinook Sugarbeeters came in second with 176, and the Big S...
One of the most devastating things that can happen to an athlete in any stage of his or her career is to suffer a major injury. Knee injuries seem to be more and more common, and while they may be serious, they can be overcome. Havre High senior Roxanna Jensen has had to come back from a serious knee injury, not once, but twice. Jensen is a key component for the Blue Pony softball team. She is the starting shortstop for head coach Danny Wirtzberger, as well as one of the more consistant bats in the lineup. Jensen is also...

On Friday night, the Central A Ponies hosted the Class B Conrad Cowboys for a dual. Forsyth was scheduled to...
Things don't always go according to plan in the sports world, so when a team escapes with a win, that is all that matters. That might be the case for the Havre High girls basketball team. Sometimes a team can do a lot of things right on the basketball court, but if the shot just isn't falling on offense, it becomes very hard to win. The Havre High boys basketball team found that out on Saturday, as the Blue Ponies ran into a solid, but beatable Class B Conrad squad. The Cowboys defeated the Ponies 50-46 at the Havre High gymnasium. With the loss, the Ponies' overall record dropped to 2-6, while they remain 1-2 in the Central A. Havre High's Kade Rismon, left, makes a move during Saturday's high school boys...
