With football season marching on, some local teams continued to struggle, while others continued to prove they are on the rise this season. Friday, the Big Sandy Pioneers and North Star Knights battled it out in Big Sandy in Northern C Six-Man play. While the struggles continued for the Pioneers, the No. 8 Knights looked strong, earning the 59-12 win. The Pioneers dropped to 1-2 and the Knights improved to 3-0. Cooper Spicher and Quinn Spinler continued to lead the Knights...
A major goal has finally been scratched from the Havre High football team’s to-do list. And from the players to the coaches, the entire Blue Pony program can breathe a sigh of relief. Sitting at 0-2-1 on the season, the Central A Ponies were not in panic mode, but a win was strongly needed. And after a couple of tight matchups the last couple of weeks, that win finally came. Friday night at Blue Pony Stadium in Havre. The Ponies defeated the Eastern A Glendive Red Devils 3...
It was another solid dayof running for the Havre High boys and girls cross country teams, but there is still plenty of room for improvement before the postseason races. Thursday, the Central A Ponies faced some good talent in Lewistown. Tturning in some very good performances, the HHS boys finished as the No. 7 team overall with 181 points. The Havre girls also had some very nice individual performances, but did not record a team score as just six runners finished the race. But the boys looked very good on a tough course in...
Daniel Horton Havre Daily News sports witer [email protected] Playing on the road is never an easy task, and the Havre High volleyball team is very much aware of that fact, as the Blue Ponies have yet to play at home to this point in the season. But things got a little bit better for the Central A Ponies Saturday, as they found a way to pick up two wins on the road. Saturday, the Ponies were in Lewistown for two more nonconference matches. The Ponies hadn’t earned a win since the opening weekend of the season, a c...
Before Friday night’s prep football game in Havre, the Havre High football team thought it might have secret weapon. It turns out the Blue Ponies were right, but freshman Parker Filius will not be a secret moving forward. Filius has burst onto the Blue Pony scene as a freshman athlete, and before Friday night, more people may have been waiting to see what he could accomplish for the HHS wrestling program. But after Friday’s 33-0 win over Glendive, more people will surely be tu...
There are not a lot of towns or cities in Montana that offer full contact, tackle football below the middle school age level. But the city of Havre is not one of those without, as Havre is fortunate enough to have the Lil’ Ponies football program for the last 10 years. The Lil’ Ponies got started by the likes of Phil Stokes and Scott Filius, and it has been going strong ever since. And Havre’s fourth, fifth, and sixth graders have the opportunity to play just like their Havre...
Wins have been hard to come by for the Havre High volleyball team this season, but hopefully this weekend will change that. After a couple of tournaments the last two weekends, two matches on the road seems like a relatively light weekend, but facing two very good Class A programs, there will be nothing easy about Saturday’s matchups. Last weekend, the Central A Ponies played in Great Falls at the Electric City Classic, playing nine matches. Saturday, they will be in Lewistown where they will play two non-conference o...
There have been a lot of important games and landmark wins in the Havre High football program’s history, and nine years ago, the first home game of the 2004 season was one of the biggest. Now, the Blue Ponies and Glendive Red Devils don’t meet very often, but back in the day, these two teams used to clash on the gridiron quite a bit, and even battled for the coveted Moore Trophy. In 2004 the meeting between the Ponies and Red Devils went in Havre’s favor, but more impor...
Attempting to avoid a second straight loss, and the third loss on the season, the Havre High football team knows exactly what it has to do get the first win of the year. Sitting at 0-2-1, the Central A Blue Ponies know they have a winnable week-four game. And after a couple of tight matchups over the last two weeks, the Ponies would love nothing more than to grab their first win of the season playing in Havre at Blue Pony Stadium. And in their return home, the Blue Ponies...
Two tournaments are all that stand between the Havre High boys and girls golf teams and the 2013 Central A Divisional Tournament. Two tough tournaments on tough golf courses that is. Today, the Blue Ponies play the first of two 18-hole tournaments in the Billings area as Havre participates in the Billings Central Invitational. The Ponies will also be in Laurel for the Laurel Invitational Friday morning. Havre has finished its varsity qualifying for the 2013 season, so the players playing in this week’s events will be the s...
Kaylie Gilman is a former Havre High Blue Pony. She was on the verge of being a Pony standout on the basketball court, volleyball court, and on the track in Havre, but wound up being a standout for the Big Sandy Pioneers instead. Gilman attended Havre High her freshman and sophomore years, but transferred to Big Sandy where’s she found a home with the Pioneers. Gilman is in her final year of an already standout career with the Pioneers. She is a post player on the b...
The Montana State University-Northern rodeo team had a busy weekend, but at least it was a busy weekend at home. Friday through Sunday, the MSU-N rodeo teams hosted the annual rodeo at the Great Northern Fairgrounds in Havre, inviting in a lot of great talent from the Big Sky Region. Both the men’s and women’s teams fared well in front of local fans. Montana State University (MTSU) took the No. 1 men’s spot with 655 points, while Northwest College (NWC) finished in second with...
Everybody knows that conference football games mean the most. And while it is still early in the season, several Hi-Line squads faced a conference rival over the weekend. In Northern C Six-Man action, the Box Elder Bears hosted the rival Big Sandy Pioneers Saturday. With the Pioneer win and Bears loss, both teams now stand at 1-1 this season. Big Sandy defeated Box Elder 46-43 in an offensive shootout. Neither team scored in the third quarter, but there were plenty of points...
As the cross country season continues to march on, the Havre High boys and girls continue to show improvement. After running at the Cut Bank Time Trials last weekend, the Central A Blue Ponies’ season debut, the Ponies competed in Malta Saturday. And continuing to improve on their times and performances, both the HHS boys and girls ran very well. The Blue Pony boys were expected to be at full strength for the first time this young season, but ran in week two with just five varsity runners. They still ran very well, f...
Turnovers always find a way to impact a football game, especially late, and when playing from behind. That was the case on Friday night on the road, as the Havre High football team dropped to 0-2-1 on the season. In another non-conference matchup, the Central A Ponies faced their second consecutive Eastern A opponent. And after a 6-6 tie with the Miles City Cowboys last weekend, it was the Sidney Eagles who disappointed the Ponies’ weekend Friday night in Sidney. The Eagles defeated the Ponies 14-7 and improved to 3-0 on t...
It is no accident that the Electric City Classic volleyball tournament has grown into one of the toughest prep volleyball tournaments on a lot of teams’ schedules. This weekend, the Havre High volleyball team got a reminder of just how tough the Great Falls tournament can be. Friday and Saturday, the Central A Blue Ponies were in Great Falls, facing a lot of tough teams. The Ponies got plenty of playing time, as they played seven matches in pool play Friday as well as two more matches in Saturday’s consolation bracket. In...
If last weekend was any kind of preview into the future of the Northern C Six-Man football season, final standings at the end of the season may be flipped upside down compared to recent years. For a while now, the Big Sandy Pioneers have been a powerhouse in Six-Man football. That fact was highlighted by a trip to the state championship game last year. And on the flipside, and just a 10 mile trip down the road, the Box Elder Bears are relatively new to the 6-Man scene and...
Moving into the second weekend of competition, the Havre High cross country teams should see solid improvements on both the boys and girls squads, especially now that the Blue Ponies are competing at full strength. Last week, the Central A Ponies opened the season running at the Cut Bank Time Trials. Team scores were not kept, but the HHS runners turned in a lot of good times. But more importantly, the Ponies discovered who the seven varsity runners were going to be for both...
If anybody should be excited about getting back on the football field, it’s the Havre High football team. In athletics, it is hard to think of anything worse than ending in a tie. Nobody likes a loss for obvious reasons, but ending a nonconference rivalry game at 6-6 after basically just one half of play is maybe just as bad. That is the situation the Central A Blue Ponies found themselves in in their home opener last Friday night, as the Ponies tied the Miles City Cowboys 6...
Every year the Havre High volleyball team plays in some of the state’s top volleyball tournaments, and heading into only the third weekend of their season, the Blue Ponies will travel to one of those notoriously tough tournaments in Great Falls. Friday and Saturday, the Central A Ponies, 1-2 in the conference, will travel to Great Falls for the Electric City Classic. Havre High is a young and inexperienced team, even with six seniors, and a trip to the Electric City Classic c...
The college rodeo season comes and goes with the blink of an eye this time of year, so local fans aren’t going to want to miss a chance to see the Montana State University-Northern rodeo teams compete at home. Friday, the rodeo will begin at 7 p.m., while Saturday’s slack will begin at 9 a.m. Rodeo action will resume at 7 p.m. Saturday, and wil...

With prep football now at full swing, the Hi-Line saw plenty of gridiron action Friday and Saturday. In Class B action, the Harlem Wildcats started their season 0-1, as visiting Big Timber earned the 21-6 win. Seth Adams did score the only touchdown of the day for the Wildcats, but outside of the one end zone visit, Harlem had a tough day offensively. Adams’ score came on a 41-yard rush in the first quarter, as the Wildcats saw a 7-6 first quarter deficit turn into a 1...
The end of the prep football season is typically when the weather starts to turn ugly. Especially in the state playoffs, teams have to deal with the elements and they play in the wind, they play in the rain, and they play in the snow. But football players and schedules can endure a lot and it takes special circumstances to postpone or cancel a football game completely. A severe lightning storm looming over Blue Pony Stadium in Havre on a Friday night falls under that category of a special circumstance. Friday night in Havre,...
There was a feeling in the air that the Havre High football team had an opportunity to beat the Miles City Cowboys for the first time in a long time. But Mother Nature had different ideas, and an eventual tie will leave fans wondering what might have been. Friday night at Blue Pony Stadium in Havre, the Central A Ponies hosted the Eastern A Cowboys. Both squads came into the contest 0-1, and now both teams leave the contest 0-1-1. The game was ended after a two-hour delay due...
