  • Big Sandy girls beat Box Elder in consolation game

    Daniel Horton|Updated Feb 24, 2014

Behind the Chinook Sugarbeeters, and maybe even the North Star Knights, the rest of the girls 9C field was chasing second place at the district tournament. Both Big Sandy and Box Elder had high hopes of knocking somebody off and moving into one of those top two spots. Unfortunately neither team accomplished that task in 2014 as the Pioneers and Bears found themselves battling it out in the consolation finals Saturday afternoon. Saturday at the Havre High gymnasium, the Pioneer...

In the 9C boys consolation game, the Thunderbirds and Knights battled for third place. And Saturday afternoon at the Havre High gymnasium, the Thunderbirds defeated the Knights 59-46. “Yeah, this was a decent showing by our guys, but we were disappointed,” Hay...

    Daniel Horton|Updated Feb 24, 2014

It’s been a while, but the Havre High girls basketball team was faced with some doubt about whether or not the Blue Ponies would win the Central A regular season title. But in the final game of the regular season, the Blue Ponies put that doubt to rest, and they did it rather quickly. Saturday night at the Havre Central gymnasium, the Ponies hosted the conference rival Browning Indians. The winner would claim the No. 1 seed, the loser, the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Central A...

It is always tough suffering a conference loss to end the regular season, but fortunately for the Havre High boys, the team wasn’t knocked too far down in the league standings. Saturday night in Browning the Central A Blue Ponies suffered a 78-57 loss to the Indians. The season finale loss gave the Ponies a 4-4 Central A record and 6-12 record overall. The loss also gave the Ponies a third place finish and the Indians a second place finish heading into the post season. The fin...

    Daniel Horton|Updated Feb 21, 2014

An unlikely hero emerged in the District 9C boys semifinal basketball game on Thursday night in Havre. Playing at the Havre High gymnasium with a championship game berth on the line, the Chinook Sugarbeeters and Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds were locked up in a very tight game. But heading into the fourth quarter, it was the Beeters who were able to widen the gap and earn the 52-44 win. The win means the second-seeded Beeters (13-7) will face the Box Elder Bears in the title...

    Daniel Horton|Updated Feb 21, 2014
    1

Randall Gardipee has been a standout basketball player on the Hi-Line for the last four years. And great season after great season, Gardipee has even managed to be more of an impact player in his final season for the District 9C Box Elder Bears. There have been some memorable moments for the Bears in recent years, especially last season. A year ago the Bears had big games like a triple-overtime win over Big Sandy to win the 9C title. But there have been no letups since that hi...

  • Thunderbirds soar into semifinals

    Daniel Horton|Updated Feb 20, 2014

In the opening round of the District 9C tournament, Big Sandy put up a good fight until the bitter end. But unfortunately for the Pioneers, the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds proved to be too tough of an opponent and ran away with the win. Playing for a chance to get into tonight’s semifinals, the Thunderbirds and Pioneers tipped off Wednesday night at the HHS gymnasium. But it wasn’t long before the Thunderbirds were clearly in control, eventually defeating Big Sandy 50-...

  • Big Sandy girls cruise past Hays-Lodge Pole

    Daniel Horton|Updated Feb 20, 2014

There was a trend of dominating wins and lopsided losses on the first day of the District 9C tournament in Havre, and Big Sandy and Hays Lodge-Pole were on opposite ends of the spectrum. In girls action, the Pioneers defeated the Thunderbirds 65-17 Wednesday in the first round. And like so many of the other blowouts, the Pioneers were in complete control right from the start. Big Sandy won the tip and raced off to an impressive 28-0 lead after the first quarter and a 38-10...

BILLINGS - Make it two in a row for the Havre High wrestling team. And that's now nine for Blue Pony head coach Scott Filius. Saturday night, the Blue Ponies walked out of the Rimrock Auto Arena in Billings as Class A state champions for the second straight season, and for the ninth time since 1999. Havre got a huge fight from its biggest rival as Sidney sent eight wrestlers into the finals, but they couldn't catch the Ponies, who scored 294.5 points and crowned four...

  • Daniel Horton Column: Blue Ponies, girls, small schools, whatever it is, state is never dull

    Daniel Horton|Updated Feb 17, 2014

If you have seen one state wrestling tournament at the Metra Park Rimrock Auto Arena, you have not seen them all, not even close. I have had the privilege of covering the all-class tournament for several years now, and every year the story lines which come away from the 12 mats are some of the best in prep sports in all of Montana. The 2014 state tournament was no exception, as some of the hardest-working athletes in the state accomplished things they will never forget. And it wasn’t just the Havre High squad writing those m...

  • State Swimming: Havre girls finish strong

    Daniel Horton|Updated Feb 17, 2014

They may be younger and outnumbered by some of the Class AA swim teams, but the Havre High girls and boys performed very well at yet another state swim meet. The Blue Ponies may not have grabbed a state champinship this weekend, but after being in the waters of the Butte YMCA at the Montana State Swimming Championships Friday and Saturday, things will hopefully just continue to get better for the Ponies moving forward. Finishing in second place in the Class A ranks, and in ten...

For the second straight season, the Blue Ponies captured the Class A state championship, and they did it in record fashion. The Central A Blue Ponies were crowned the Class A state champions Saturday night in Billings. The Ponies turned in another great season all around under veteran head coach Scott Filius, but all that hard work was put on the line at the Rimrock Aut...

  • State Wrestling 2014: Two Brothers, One Medal

    Daniel Horton|Updated Feb 14, 2014

Once a Havre High wrestler reaches the state tournament, they find themselves facing an individual from another area of the state most of the time. Typically, it is an opponent outside the division for the Central A Blue Pony grappler. Most times, Havre grapplers have to get through Sidney, Corvallis, Laurel and the rest of the Class A to reach glory. Sometimes, the two going head to head for state supremacy have never even crossed paths in the past, but on some occasions the...

With just two games left in the regular season, both the Havre High boys and girls basketball teams are heading for the finish line, each playing one nonconference game this weekend, followed by the regular season finales next week against conference-rival Browning Indians. But this should be a stress free weekend for both the Central A Blue Pony squads. Both teams will play in Rocky Boy Saturday night. The HHS girls (6-1, 10-6) will face the Morning Stars at 5 p.m., followed...

  • Hi-Line Boys Basketball Roundup

    Daniel Horton|Updated Feb 11, 2014

Many area basketball teams have just two weeks of competition left in the regular season, and some of those Hi-Line programs were able to continue on the winning path, while others still found themselves sticking close to the loss column. On Thursday, the District 2B Harlem Wildcats dropped another close league game at home. The Glasgow Scotties defeated the Wildcats 47-43 as Harlem was unable to overcome a two-point third quarter. The Wildcats did post 16 points in the...

With two more big games on the slate for the Havre Blue Ponies, they came away with a split, but the win was a key one. The Central A Ponies lost six straight games counting a tough 68-62 loss to the Class B Fairfield Eagles on the road Friday night. And even more important than the team title earned by Havre, the Blue Ponies are now one step closer to claiming yet another Class A state title. Saturday, the Blue Ponies competed against the rest of the Central A in Browning. The Ponies proved they are too deep and too talented to be knocked off their divisional throne with an impressive 296 team points....
