For nearly six years I have called Havre home. I have family here, I have met a lot of great people here, I spent the first couple years of my marriage here, my wife finished her teaching degree at Montana State University-Northern, and the Havre Daily News gave me a shot fresh out of college when other newspapers were busy with layoffs and downsizing. It truly was time well spent, and I am thankful to have had the opportunity to work and live here. That makes leaving...
The goal heading into the weekend was a state championship, and after a third-place finish a year ago, the Hi-Line United U19 soccer club knew that was a plausible goal for 2014. But while the United did a lot of growing up since last year's rebuilding stages, so did the competition. The Montana State Cup in Billings proved to be very competitive this year, and the United saw that in their three matches on the pitch, and eventual fourth-place finish. "It was truly a tough tour...

Kiana Robertson lets nothing get in her way on the soccer field There is no crying in baseball, but if you are the only, or one of the few girls on a U19 co-ed soccer team, there is no crying in soccer either. Kiana Robertson has been playing club soccer for the last six years, the first three on a U16 Hi-Line United all girls program, and the last three years on the Hi-Line United U19 program in Havre. Robertson is currently a midfielder for the United, and is one of just...
After taking on Glasgow for the third time in less than a month, the Havre North Stars American Legion baseball team continued to find mixed results against the Reds. In mid-May the North Stars defeated the Reds’ B squad, but fell to the A squad in a home doubleheader. Over the weekend at the Havre Jamboree, the North Stars defeated the B squad for the second time. But just like they did at home last month. Monday night in Glasgow, the North Stars split with the reads, defeating the B team 5-0, but losing to the A team 1...
With another Havre Jamboree in the books, the Havre North Stars American Legion baseball team got the opportunity to play four more home games over the weekend. Joining the North Stars at Legion Field in Havre was the Lethbridge Giants, Fort MacLeod Royals, Strathmore Reds, Missoula Prospects, Glacier Twins, Tri County Cardinals, Glasgow Reds A squad, and Glasgow Reds...
Playing two games at home over the weekend, the Hi-Line United U19 soccer team ran into two teams that made very solid cases for possibly being two of the state’s best for a second consecutive season. Last year, the Big Timber Wolves won the Classic state championship, while the Sidney Strikers were last year’s Classic runner-up. The United hosted both of those squads Saturday at the Havre High School soccer fields and suffered two tough losses. Saturday morning, Big Tim...

Saturday the United will host Big Timber and Sidney at the Havre High School soccer fields. The United will first face the Big Timber Wolves;...

The entire Havre North Stars American Legion baseball roster got an at-bat Tuesday night, and it was a complete team effort that resulted in the come-from-behind victory. Tuesday at Legion Field in Havre, the North Stars played one seven-inning game against the Great Falls Outlaws Senior Babe Ruth squad. The Outlaws jumped out to a dominating lead, but it was the North Stars who came away with the impressive 9-8 win at home. Havre remains 2-2 in the North, but improved to 4-5...
When two teams are as evenly matched on the baseball diamond as the Havre North Stars and Medicine Hat Knights were, the difference between winning and losing can come down to just one or two runs, or key plays. That was the case Sunday at Legion Field in Havre when the North Stars hosted the Knights for a Northern District doubleheader. The Knights took game one with a final score of 5-4. But the North Stars bounced back nicely in game two, and took the nightcap 5-4. The...
BUTTE — The competition at the state level skyrockets in comparison to the regular season, and the Havre High track and field team got a heavy dose of the tough pool of talent over the weekend. Friday and Saturday the Central A Blue Ponies competed at the Class A state track meet at Bulldog Memorial Field in Butte. And while the talented Ponies didn’t make much of dent in the team standings, the talented individuals in attendance this season still gave it all they had had ove...
After a short stretch of no games for the Havre American Legion baseball program, the North Stars are once again preparing to continue on with the 2014 schedule. A week ago the North Stars split a home doubleheader with the Glasgow Reds, bringing their overall record to 2-4. But the competition isn't going to get any easier, as the North Stars now await a home doubleheader with the Medicine Hat Knights from north of the border. Sunday's games will be played at Legion Field in...
Thinking back over the last several state track meets, it is hard to think of a time when the Hi-Line wasn't sending an exciting and explosive talent to compete against the best of the best. And there have been some greats in recent history, including several names from the North Star girls team, Kourtney Danreuther from Big Sandy, Kellen Warren from North Star, and even Sammy Evans from Havre High. One thing these greats always have in common is the buzz surrounding them...
Last weekend at the Central A divisional track meet in Havre, the Havre Blue Ponies’ lack of numbers proved to put the program at a disadvantage in the team standings. But that doesn’t mean the Ponies don’t have standout individuals. In fact, the Ponies do have quality athletes, and those individuals will be on display this weekend for one final track meet as they attempt to finish strong among the best of the best. With just one meet left on the schedule, the Ponies will...
Over the last five years, the Havre High softball program was turning in gear by this point in the season, but after a stellar divisional tournament, and a third-place finish in the Central A, the Blue Ponies are making their way back to the Class A state tournament. This year the state tournament will be played Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Polson. And entering as a No. 3 seed, the Ponies know the field of competitors will be deep and talented. No. 1 seeds include...
There is always some discussion when it comes to what makes a program or athlete elite. There are many factors that go into making that decision, including accomplishments and the caliber of the opponent faced. But other times, there is no discussion at all, an athlete can simply let his or her numbers and achievements speak for themselves. Havre High sophomore Jeff Miller always knew he had what it takes to be an elite prep tennis player. It is in his genes. And growing up...
With the powerhouse Belgrade Panthers in the mix, it wasn’t a tight race for the Central A divisional title this year. But the Havre High boys track team did find out that the race for third place would come down to the wire. Friday and Saturday the Havre High Blue Ponies hosted the annual Central A track meet at the Havre Middle School Track. And after the long two days, the Panthers captured the No. 1 team finish with an impressive 204 points. The Lewistown Golden Eagles f...
Both the Havre High boys and girls teams were chasing numbers at the Central A divisional track meet, but it seemed to hit the Blue Pony girls a little bit harder this season. The Central A Blue Ponies have a lot of talented track and field stars, but facing the bigger squads in the division they were spread too thin to keep pace in the team standings. The Ponies wrapped up Friday and Saturday’s divisional meet at the Havre Middle School track and field in fourth place with 6...
The wait is over. The Havre High softball program will make its first trip to the Class A state tournament in five seasons. It was another long season with plenty of ups and downs for the Central A Blue Ponies, but after two days at the divisional tournament in Belgrade, the Ponies will take on the best of the best this weekend at state. Friday and Saturday in Belgrade, the Ponies went 2-2 at the second annual Central A softball tournament to finish in third place. It took a...
It wasn’t that long ago that state championships, medals and hardware were second nature to the Havre High tennis teams. And the Blue Ponies got back to that kind of success in a big way this past weekend at the Class A state tournament in Billings. Havre High sophomore Jeff Miller captured the Class A singles state championship Friday afternoon in Billings, becoming the fourth Blue Pony to win a boys singles championship. Miller’s win over Corvallis’ D.J. Pekoc, who was f...

But after a week of rest heading into this weekend's Central A Divisional meet in Havre, the HHS girls should be able to turn in several top times and distances against the rest of the Central A. Today and Saturday the Belgrade...
It is always tough to compete with the best track programs in the conference when a team doesn't quite have the same numbers and depth. But the Havre High boys track and field team has produced some solid marks and times this season, and will put it all on the line this weekend in Havre. Today and Saturday, the Central A Blue Ponies will host the Central A Divisional track meet at the Havre Middle School track. It will be a battle for the Ponies as they host the Belgrade...
Now that the Havre High softball team is in the postseason, it is time to take care of a goal the Central A Blue Ponies have had for several years now: getting back to an elite level and competing for a Class A state title. The Belgrade Panthers are the No. 1 seed, followed by the No. 2 Lewistown Golden Eagles and No. 3 Livingston Rangers....
