With a final annexation resolution filed with the state, Havre and Hill County are still working out which entity will take over maintenance of which roads. During a meeting Tuesday afternoon between several representatives of both Havre city government and the Hill County Commission, the sides decided to crunch numbers and come back to the table later. The county is losing 5 miles of road total through the annexation process but still has to maintain more than 1,800 miles, said County Road Supervisor Jerry Otto. He said...
The open sign at Norman's Ranch and Western Wear wasn't lit Sunday. "Because there was no way people could even get in in front of the store," owner Scott Young said. "People just can't get around," he said. But the store is open again, after Young hired a company to clear the parking area Monday. Once the streets are cleared, he said, business should pick back up. It already has with the work done Monday, he said. Business elsewhere was down as well. "Our traffic in here is probably one-third of normal," said David Shaw, a... Full story
An initial report from the state Office of Public Instruction showing high percentages of suspensions prompted Havre's director of education to take a closer look at the numbers. Andy Carlson said that he and his staff broke down the figures and updated them to more closely examine what percentage of Native American students were being suspended vs. white students. "It's good that information like this makes us ask those questions," Carlson said. And while those questions are uncomfortable, "I was pleased to see those...

An application for a grant to build a recycling center at the new landfill will not be submitted after all. "Our idea of a recycling facility in partnership with the city and the county failed," said Candi Zion, the chairperson of Recycle Hi-Line. The recycling group asked for support from government bodies in Hill, Blaine and Chouteau counties to submit a Montana Department of Environmental Quality energy efficiency and conservation block grant. Only governments can apply for the funding, and the recycling group planned to...
The nautical navigational signal known as LORAN-C will be shut off Feb. 8 nationwide, including at the U.S. Coast Guard base north of Havre. The base, which deals exclusively with the signal and at which five Coast Guard employees are stationed, will be shut down as well, with the personnel restationed at other bases, said Mike Sollosi chief of the office of navigation systems for the Guard. Originally, the LORAN-C signal was a classified navigational program during World War II, Sollosi said. The coastal system became a...
One stretch of U.S. Highway 2 near the North Dakota border is being rebuilt as a four-lane highway. Now the president of the group working to make the entire 600-plus miles of the road four lanes is hopeful that a stretch closer to home will soon see the same change. The 10-mile stretch of road runs from Havre to near the landfill in Blaine County, said Bob Sivertsen, president of the Highway 2 Association. At Tuesday's City Council meeting, the association will ask for Havre's support to revisit an environmental impact...
The stage was set, and fifth-graders, along with one fourth-grader, were asked questions about geography. Those questions, developed by the National Geographic Society, were not easy questions and had members of the audience twittering with appreciation and awe at correct answers. Some answers were given orally, others written and some required interpretation of maps before an answer was given. Much of the information in the bee was not covered in regular curriculum, Marge Suek, who headed up the bee, said, although classes...
Marc Mariani's football career has been closely followed by Havre residents for two years. His flare for long gains on kickoff returns and turning hard to reach passes into points for the University of Montana Grizzlies has kept people riveted to their screens. But there were years before when people said he didn't stand a chance in college football, and he had to create his own shot, he told students at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic School. His career began in seventh grade with a too-large helmet and no experience and is...
