Local Golf Report: Local golf leagues hit stretch run

From Tee to Green...

There’s plenty of summer fun left on the golf course. But the new school year will be upon us in no time as well.

And that means that it’s time for the Havre High golf teams to start thinking about the upcoming season. Blue Pony golfers will begin practicing Aug. 14, and anyone wishing to participate in golf is reminded that he or she will need a sports physical completed before the first day of the new season.

Things are quiet on the tournament front for local golfers, but the Northern Montana Health Care Foundation Scramble is fast approaching. The tournament is slated for Aug. 2 at Prairie Farms Golf Course. Prairie Farms will also be the site of the 2014 Blue Pony Scramble. The event, which is a fundraiser for the HPS Foundation, will take place Aug. 31, one day after Havre High hosts Whitefish in the season-opening football game at Blue Pony Stadium.

Last Tuesday, in men’s league action at Prairie Farms, Havre Muffler was high team with 24.5 points. The team was composed of Jerry Woods, Jerry Donovan, Steve Granell and Mike Gomke. Kyle Sheppard fired a 1-under-par 35 for low gross, while Dennis Kannberg was low net with a 28. Last Wednesday night saw Jeremy Jensen put together a 2-under-par 34 for low gross, while Gene Harada and Dave Herman tied for low net at 31. Independence Bank was high team with 24 points. The team is made up of Todd Smith, Dennis Murphy, Byron Ophus and Harada.

Last Thursday night in ladies league action, DA Davidson scored 23.5 points to take high-team honors. The team was composed of Patsy Divish, Shari Baltrusch, Karla Bolken and Paula Sheppard. Tammy Boles was low gross with a 41, while Baltrusch and Bolken shared low net at 30.

While there aren’t many tournaments on the local golf scene right now, two big ones will take place this week in Montana. The 97th Montana State Men’s Amateur will be held at Whitefish Lake Golf Club Thursday through Saturday and will feature Billings’ golf star Brandon McIver as the defending champion. McIver competed at last month’s U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 and will compete at next month’s U.S. Amateur. The 97th Montana State Women’s Amateur will also be held Thursday through Saturday at the Yellowstone Country Club in Billings. If any local players compete in either, hopefully we’ll have their scores in next week’s From Tee to Green.
