Local Golf Report: Men's league reaches the halfway mark

From Tee to Green...

Soccer might be center stage right now, but it’s also that time of year when golf becomes the focal point for many. After all, summer is about to officially begin, even if it doesn’t feel, or look like it in Havre right now.

The U.S. Open is in the books, and I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate Billings native Brandon McIver, who, at just 20 years of age, rebounded from a difficult 82 on the opening day at Pinehurst No. 2 by shooting a stellar 73 last Friday. McIver was the first Montanan to compete in the U.S. Open in six years, and with the way he’s playing as an amateur and at the University of Oregon, he just might be one of the best Montana-born golfers in a long, long time.

Back on the home golf front, the first half of men’s league golf ended this past week in eight teams qualifying for the playoffs at Prairie Farms later this summer. Dan Wagner Plumbing captured the first half in the Tuesday night standings with 150.5 points, while Northern Edge was second, Lisa’s 15 West was third and Hole 19 was fourth. In the Wednesday night standings, Michelob Light was first with 123.5 points, followed by Valley Furniture, Independence Bank and DA Davidson.

Last Tuesday night saw Nalivkas earn high-team honors with 23 points. The team was composed of Thomas Kline, Rob The Boy, Paul Jensen and Jared Weigel. Kyle Sheppard and Roman Surber each shot rounds of 1-under-par 35 to share low gross, while Gerry Veis and Mike Olson shared low net at 30. Last Wednesday night, Matt Hedstrom sizzled with a 3-under-par 33 for low gross, while Barry Zanto was low net with a 28. Hi-Line Audio/Video was high team with 23 points. Hedstrom, Mike Erickson, Brian Jenkins and Scott Stockdill made up the team.

In ladies’ league action last Thursday night at Prairie Farms, Schubert Agency scored 29.5 points to earn high-team honors. The team is composed of Susie LaSalle, Kari Riley, Judi Adams and Nancy Salapich. Teresa Brown was low gross with an outstanding 39, while Kelsey Ward was low net with a 30.5.

On the tournament front, an outstanding time was had by all at the annual Natalie Patrick Foundation Scramble last Saturday at Prairie Farms. Next up on the schedule is the NLASF Scramble, which will be held this Saturday.

Next month will also be a busy one at Prairie Farms, and one of the big events on the calander is the annual Rotary Club Junior Golf Camp. The camp will be held July 8-10 and is open to boys and girls ages 8-18. The cost is $25 per camper, and golfers can sign up by calling the Pro Shop at Prairie Farms.
