HHS thinclads star in Belgrade

Havre High’s track and field numbers may keep the boys and girls teams from winning some of the bigger meets throughout the season, but the individual Blue Pony athletes who continue to place and score points also continue to impress the coaching staff.

Nearly 20 teams made the trip to Belgrade Saturday for the annual Gallatin Valley Invitational, and the competition was fierce. But teams, like they so often do, found themselves chasing the hosting Panthers.

The Belgrade boys finished in first place with 103 points. Manhattan finished second with 82, while Lewistown finished in a distant third with 68 team points. The Ponies were able to come up with 25 points and finished in ninth place, finishing behind Dillon with 67, Manhattan Christian with 42, Livingston with 32, Anaconda with 30 and Big Timber with 28. Butte Central (23), Harrison (13), Sheridan (nine), Whitehall (six), and Jefferson (four) were also in attendance.

But in girls action, the Ponies did much better, earning 42 points, and finishing in a tie for third place with Manhattan Christian. No. 1 Belgrade dominated with 144, while Dillon took the No. 2 spot with 89. Billings Central (38), Harrison (30), Livingston (29), Jefferson (28), Lewistown (24), Butte Central (21), West Yellowstone (19), Manhattan Christian (10) and Willow Creek (eight) rounded out the top finishes.

“The girls performed very well against a lot of good competition,” Havre High head coach John Ita said. “We were just tickled with their finish, and all the girls worked hard all day long and got personal bests, or came very close. All of the coaches were pleased with their performance. The boys this year, it just seems like the competition is very tough. We had a couple of boys run very well in the 400-meter, but not score a point, the talent was amazing. Mike Loftus ran well and placed for us, but we had kids like Nate Rismon also run the 400, and ran a personal best, but got completely left out of the top standings.”

Loftus ran the 400 in 54.06 seconds, good enough for a sixth-place finish for the Ponies. But the competition was fierce enough to keep Loftus out of the top six in the 100 and 200-meter sprints, his bread and butter this season. Brauk Wood was also a nice surprise for the Ponies, as he leaped 18-10 to finish fifth in the long jump. Thomas Gruber and Gunnar Aageson continue to compete well in the pole vault, as the two rounded out the individual placers for the HHS boys. Gruber cleared 12-6 and took second place, while Aageson cleared 11-6 and finished in fifth place.

The short relay team ran a 46.79 in a sixth-place finish, while the long relay team ran a 3:51.66, also good enough for a sixth-place finish.

Some familiar names also continue to lead the HHS girls.

Haley Ohm, Peyton Filius, and Rachel David all placed in two events each. Ohm finished fourth in the 1,600 with a time of 5:48.34, and fifth in the 3,200 with a time of 13:12.98. Filius and David both performed well in the 400 and 800-meter runs. David took third in the 400 with a time of 1:04.58, while Filius took third with a time of 1:05.86. But in the 800, it was Filius taking third with a time of 2:30.30 while David finished in fourth with a time of 2:34.77.

Martha Stocker took fourth in the shot put with a throw of 32-5, while Lacey Waid continues to dominate in the pole vault. Saturday Waid took home another No. 1 finish, this time clearing 10-0. The Ponies also had two 1600 relay teams place, one in fourth (4:37.01), and the other in sixth place (4:46.00).

Overall, it was another solid outing for the Ponies. They turned in some nice numbers and marks, but more importantly, got a little bit better, and continue to find out what to tweak, and what to improve on.

“This meet really let us fine tune, especially in events like our relays,” Ita said.” We have been battling back and forth on who to let run, and now we have a better idea moving forward. But it was a good weekend overall, we got to compete, we competed hard, and we escaped the bad weather.”

Havre has another short turnaround, and will get back to action Tuesday when the Ponies travel to Malta.
