Rocky Boy survives scare from Harlem

It’s not often that bitter rivals open a postseason tournament against each other. But that was the case Thursday night in Glasgow.

And it was a Northern B rivalry game for the ages as the Rocky Boy Stars edged the Harlem Wildcats 63-62 in the first round of the Northern B boys tournament at Glasgow High School.

Rocky Boy rolled into Glasgow on a five-game winning streak and a dominant performance at the 1B tourney last weekend. And the Stars also swept the Wildcats during the regular season, so Thursday’s game figured to be a one-sided affair. But somebody forgot to tell the Wildcats who surged ahead 13-9 in the first period. Harlem held a two-point lead at halftime before the Stars pulled in front 47-43 with eight minutes left. The Wildcats had one final run in them, but it wasn’t quite enough as Harlem missed on a couple of game-winning attempts in the closing minute.

The Stars survived the scare and got 21 points from Bubby Gopher and another 14 by Junior Day Child. Harlem, which drops into loser-out play, was paced by Isiah Laurence’s 18 points and another 14 by Clay Doney. Harlem faces another 1B power in the Choteau Bulldogs this afternoon. The Bulldogs were beaten by Glasgow Thursday night, and will face the Stars in the semifinals tonight at 8.

In the other semifinal, Malta, which beat Conrad Thursday, will face Fairfield, which knocked off Plentywood Thursday afternoon. The Northern B runs through Saturday night’s championship game.
