Chinook clinches 9C title, beats C/J-I too

The regular season in girls high school basketball has come to an end. And now the real work begins as teams embark on their postseason journey this week.

The final weekend of the regular season saw the Turner Tornadoes scored a big win over Hays-Lodge Pole Friday night in a District 9C bout. The Tornadoes beat the Thunderbirds 58-34 in Hays. Kristina Conlan scored 21 points and Ella Billmayer added 19 for Turner, while HLP got 15 points by Treaunna Stiffarm and 11 from Cory Carrywater.

Box Elder picked up a win Friday night as well, beating Sunburst 64-30 in Box Elder. Tyra Gopher led the Bears with 12 points, while Krista Chief Stick and Alicia Wolf Chief each scored 10.

The Harlem Wildcats were also victorious on senior night in Harlem. The Wildcats beat rival Wolf Point in their home finale Friday night, 40-33. Jaycee Werk scored 14 points to pace Harlem, while Jaylynn Allen added 11.

Things didn’t go as well for Rocky Boy. On the road at 1B rival Conrad, the Morning Stars fell 55-30. Rocky Boy was only down 25-22 at halftime, but the Cowgirls outscored the Morning Stars 30-8 the rest of the way. Chanal Standing Rock scored 14 points for Rocky Boy in the loss.

Meanwhile, Friday night saw the Chester/J-I Hawks wrap up another perfect season in District 10C. On senior night in Chester, the Hawks beat Heart Butte 57-43. The Hawks were extremely balanced as Haley Harmon and Alixx Goldhahn each scored 12 points, while Denerey Haaland and Madeline Woods added 11 each.

And in the 9C finale for both teams Friday night, the Chinook Sugarbeeters completed a perfect conference season by turning away North Star 46-40 in Rudyard. Chinook raced out to a 19-4 lead but the Knights fought all the way back and were within striking distance in the fourth quarter. Chinook held on for the win, though.

Makhayla Farmer scored 11 points and Katelyn Neibauer and Tavin Schneider each scored nine for the Beeters. Bettie Carlon poured in a game-high 21 points for North Star, while Mackenzie Hansen scored 10.

Chinook then capped off its season with a rivalry win over C/J-I Saturday night in Chinook. The top two teams on the Hi-Line went toe-to-toe in the regular season finale, and the Beeters came out on top 42-38.

Farmer scored 14 points for Chinook (10-0, 17-1), while Neibauer and Hannah Weber each added nine. The Hawks (12-0, 16-2), who only lost twice to Chinook this season, got 15 by Goldhahn and 11 from Harmon.

North Star bounced back Saturday night and finished the season with a 42-39 win over Denton-Stanford-Geyser. Bettie Carlon scored 17 points and Mackenzie Hansen added 12 as the Knights finished the regular season 8-2 in the 9C and 13-5 overall.

Big Sandy and Box Elder wrapped up the 9C schedule with wins Saturday night as well. The Pioneers (6-4, 10-8) beat Hays-Lodge Pole (0-10, 0-18) on senior night in Big Sandy, while the Bears crushed Turner 71-22 in Box Elder.

Alyssa Lamere, Alicia Wolf Chief and Leilani Gardipee all scored eight points each for Box Elder (4-6, 10-8), while Turner (2-8, 3-15) got nine points from Lyndsay Hutton.

District tournaments will be held this week. The 9C tourney begins Wednesday in Havre, the 10C will be held in Conrad, the 1B takes place in Cut Bank and the 2B will be played in Malta.
