Hi-Line Girls Basketball Roundup

Big wins for Big Sandy, North Star, Rocky Boy

Now it’s February. In just three short weeks, area girls basketball teams will take to the hardwood in district tournaments, where every team starts fresh and dreams of state championships start.

And that’s what makes the next three weeks on the Hi-Line so vital.

This crucial past week got started Thursday night as the Chinook Sugarbeeters easily won their nonconference showdown with Dodson, 79-44 in Chinook. Emily Dennis led four Beeters in double figures with 14 points. Makhayla Farmer added 13, while Katelyn Neibauer and Nicole McCracken each scored 12.

The Beeters were equally as good Friday night as they disposed of winless Hays-Lodge Pole, 83-10 in a District 9C affair in Hays. Neibauer poured in a game-high 20 for the Beeters, while Brooke Nicholson added 13, as did Dennis. Cory Carrywater scored four points for the Thunderbirds.

While Chinook stayed unbeaten in the 9C, the North Star Knights stayed hot on the Beeters’ heels with a thrilling 48-44 win over improving Box Elder Friday night in Gildford. The game was tight throughout, but the Knights had enough left at the end to hold on for the win.

Bettie Carlon paced the Knights with 15 points, while teammate Mackenzie Hansen added 10 and Kiera Miller totaled nine. Stephanie Sutherland scored 10 for the Bears.

Big Sandy also picked up a 9C win Friday night as the Pioneers turned away the Turner Tornadoes 76-47 in Big Sandy. The Pioneers have been coming on strong and they wasted little time against Turner, out-scoring the Tornadoes 22-6 in the first quarter.

Molly Herron tallied a team-high 20 points for Big Sandy, but Abby Gregory came up big as well, scoring 15 points. Brooke Leader added 14. Ella Billmayer scored a game-high 23 points for Turner.

In Class B action Friday night, the Harlem Wildcats and Rocky Boy Morning Stars both suffered difficult district losses. The Morning Stars were turned away by the top-ranked Fairfield Eagles in Rocky Boy, while Harlem was beaten at home, 67-17 by Malta. In that 2B game, the powerful M-Ettes out-scored the Wildcats 50-8 in the first half. Ticia Cliff was the high scorer for Harlem, scoring five points.

Meanwhile, in District 10C, the Chester/J-I Hawks remained firm atop the standings with two more wins. Friday night, the Hawks dismantled rival Valier 78-38 behind 12 3-pointers. Haley Harmon buried five triples and scored 23 points, while Allix Goldhahn added 22. Denerey Haaland hit three treys and scored 13 points.

Saturday night, the Hawks took care of Dutton-Brady 46-33 in Chester. C/J-I led 25-17 at the break and played great defense for all four quarters. Goldhahn scored 15 points for C/J-I, while Haaland added 11 and Harmon chipped in with 10.

Box Elder bounced back Saturday night, beating Hobson in a close contest, 45-44. In the non-conference game, the Bears trailed 28-23 at the break but roared back to take the lead late in the third quarter. Tyra Gopher scored 14 points for the Bears in the exciting win.

Saturday night also saw Big Sandy beat Moore-Judith Gap 59-34 and North Star take care of HLP in Hays. No box scores were reported from either game.

In another nonconference game, the Turner Tornadoes tough weekend continued as they were soundly defeated by Hinsdale, 59-23 in Turner. Ella Billmayer again led the way for Turner, scoring 14 points.

Meanwhile, Rocky Boy earned an important 1B win Saturday night, beating Shelby 44-43 on the road. The game was tied at 33 heading into the final stanza, but Rocky Boy would make key shots down the stretch, avoiding an upset in the process. Senior Chanal Standing Rock had a huge game for the Morning Stars, scoring 23 points. Jude The Boy added 11.

Things didn’t go as well in the same area for Harlem. The Wildcats traveled to Cut Bank Saturday night but lost to the 1B Wolves 55-32. Harlem’s offense continued to struggle as the Wildcats scored just two points in the second quarter. Coco Moore paced Harlem with six points.
