Pony swimmers get their feet wet at home

HHS swim teams perform at season-opening Havre Invite

With a brand new head coach, and such a young and inexperienced team, the Havre Invitational was the perfect setting for the Havre High boys and girls swim teams to kick off the new season.

And that’s exactly what the Blue Ponies did Saturday at the Havre Community Pool. HHS teams hosted Great Falls High and CMR in the season-opening meet, and new Pony head coach Jill Cammon was more than pleased with how her swimmers performed.

“It went really well,” Cammon said. “This was the first time competing for a lot of our swimmer so it was exciting to see them out there. I thought all of our new swimmers did a great job, and some had times even better than in our Blue/White meet last week. I also thought our returning swimmers did very well. It was a really good meet for us all the way around.”

CMR swept the team titles. The Rustler girls scored 172 points to GFH’s 155. Havre had a combined 123 points. On the boys side, the Rustlers totaled 177 points while GFH had 116 and Havre 102.

“We didn’t beat either of the Great Falls schools, but it was really good to swim against that competition and the kids got to see kind of what to shoot for in the future,” Cammon said. “And we did have some great individual performances.”

HHS sophomore Lita Cammon had Havre’s top finish of the day. She posted a time of 1:06.38 in the 100 freestyle to place second. Morgan Jappe joined her in the top six in the race, finishing in sixth place with a time of 1:19.19. Cammon also swam a 2:54.48 in the 200 IM to finish in fourth place, while Lieza Reighard placed third in the grueling 400 free with a time of 6:01.35. Reighard placed seventh in the 200 free, while teammates Megan Smith (6:04.79), Aubri McCann (6:11.57) and Rachel David (7:51.36) placed fourth through sixth, respectively in the 400 free.

Megan Malone had a strong showing in the fast 50 free, finishing fourth with a time of 34.76, while teammate McKenna Barkus finished fifth with a time of 35.67. McCann finished third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:30.79, while Hannah Pepprock was fifth at 1:34.59. Smith placed fifth in the 100 backstroke at 1:29.31, and Jackie Martin placed fifth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:33.19.

But where Havre really made headway Saturday was in the relays. The Blue Pony team of Cammon, Jappe, Barkus and Pepprock placed second in the 200 free relay with a time of 2:16.08; while the squad made up of Smith, Malone, Alara Vogel and Jaden Korb took fifth in the same race. In the 400 free relay, Martin, McCann, Reighard and Cammon finished third with a time of 5:01.02, while the team of Malone, Pepprock, McCann and Reighard took fourth in the 200 medley relay at 2:32.18.

“That was one of the big highlights of the day,” coach Cammon exclaimed. “How well our girls relay teams swam. They had a great day.”

The Havre boys didn’t have as many top individual performances, but the Ponies are a very young and new team, so Saturday was a perfect way for them to get acquainted with high school swimming. Ben Seigel, the only returning swimmer from last year’s team, led the Ponies with a fourth-place finishes in the both the 100 free (1:08.22) and the 50 free (29.39). Jimmie Mae placed in an event for HHS, finishing fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 2:00.37, while Clayton Twombly was fifth at 2:36.46. Zach Barnes finished fifth in the 100 butterfly for the Ponies, with a time of 1:52.52, and fourth in the 200 IM at 3:25.28.

The HHS team of Barnes, Mae, Seigel and Sundance Lodge placed third in the 200 free relay with a time of 2:12.17.

And while the Blue Ponies might have gotten out-scored by the AA Rustlers and Bison, Saturday’s meet was a great experience for all of the HHS swimmers, especially being able to start a new season in their own pool. And Cammon says now her team has something to build off of.

“It was a great starting point for us,” she said. “To be in our own pool, having so many people cheering for all our swimmers, it was a really good meet. The kids got to see what else is out there, and they got to watch their teammates swim and see how they each race, and that’s something you don’t get in practice.

“So it was a really good first meet,” she added. “All the kids did very well.”

Havre is back in the pool for the Great Falls Relays and Great Falls Invite Friday-Saturday.
