MSU-Northern athletes shine

It was a busy week for Montana State University-Northern student-athletes. This past weekend, the MSU-N rodeo teams competed at the Miles Community College Rodeo in Miles City, while the MSU-N men’s and women’s golf teams played the first meet of the fall season Monday and Tuesday in Helena.

In Miles City, the MSU-N men’s rodeo team finished in fifth place in the team standings. The Lights got scoring points from bareback riders Charlie Mack and Nick Owens. Mack placed fourth in the overall standings with a 63, while Owens was fifth with a 58.

Northern wraps up the fall season this weekend at the UM-Western Rodeo in Dillon.

Monday-Tuesday, the MSU-N golf teams were in Helena for the Carroll College Classic. The 54-hole tournament was held at Green Meadow Country Club, where the Lights totaled a 1,061 for an eighth-place finish among 11 teams. MSU-N No. 1 golfer Justin Newton led the way with round of 77-71 on Monday and a 77 on Tuesday. Newton’s two-day total put him in the Top 10, tied for ninth.

The top Skylight golfers in Helena were Kaydee Aurich, who was in 25th place at 273, while Ashley Hooper finished 26th at 274. The Skylights didn’t field a full team so they weren’t eligible for the team competition.

The Rocky Mountain College men and women swept the team titles. Former North Star standout Jordy Donoven, playing for RMC, shot 75-80-71 to place 11th overall. The Lights and Skylights will compete one more time this fall.
