After last week’s season-opening tournament at Prairie Farms Golf Course, the Havre High boys and girls varsity golf teams played in their toughest tournament of the regular season.
Monday and Tuesday, the Blue Ponies competed at the annual Great Falls Invitational, where all of the Class AA teams, as well as Class A powerhouse Whitefish were in attendance. Both Eagle Falls and Anaconda Hills were used for the two-day, 36-hole tourney. The tournament is usually held at Meadowlark Country Club and not Anaconda Hills, but a scheduling conflict forced the event to be moved.
And though HHS teams finished near the bottom of the field, scores were consistent and in some places improved from last Tuesday’s season-opener. The Havre High boys finished with a two-day score of 691, which was second-to-last in the field. The Pony girls finished in the same spot with a two-day total of 797.
But teams scores weren’t the main concern for the Ponies. Instead, they were looking at improvement, and scoring as well as they could individually on two difficult golf courses, under hot and dry conditions.
On the boys side, freshman Kane Gabrielsen had the best 36-hole total for the Pony boys. Gabrielsen shot 84 on Monday and 85 on Tuesday to finish with a 169. Sophomore Jeff Miller finished right behind the freshman. Miller shot 85 on both courses to finish at 170. Fellow sophomore Jerod Boles had the low 18-hole score for the Pony boys, shooting 82 Tuesday at Eagle Falls. Boles’ 82 was outstanding as he bounced back from a difficult 97 Monday. He finished at 180 while freshman Dustin Haas was solid as well, shooting 88-91 to finish at 179. Junior Wyatt Lindbloom rounded out the Pony scoring with 92-89-181.
On the girls side, senior Boston Swensen led the way. She shot an outstanding 87 Monday afternoon, and added a 98 to finish at 185. Randi Gabrielsen also put up a strong Monday score of 88, but had a rough day Tuesday, shooting 108. Sophomore Payton Howard was third for Havre with 104-103-207. Katie Beck was fourth for the Ponies, shooting 105-104-209, while senior Nikki Gabrielsen shot 105-108-213.
The Havre High golf teams have a short turnaround before attending the East Glacier Invite Thursday at the East Glacier Park Lodge.
