NMH captures Babe Ruth city title

Coaches always stress just how important postseason baseball tournaments are. Records get thrown out the window, and every team has a shot at the title. Just ask the newly crowned Havre Youth Baseball Association Babe Ruth champions — Northern Montana Hospital.

Monday night at Legion field in Havre, the Northern Montana Hospital squad completed an outstanding postseason run. After going winless during the regular season, NMH went 3-0 over the weekend, including a 7-4 win over Optimist in the 2013 championship game.

NMH first defeated Wells Fargo 9-7, followed by a 12-2 win over Optimist on Sunday. Optimist had a 15-5 first-round win, but had to take the long rout to the championship game after Sundays’s loss to NMH. Optimist defeated Wells Fargo Monday evening, landing a spot in the championship. Wells Fargo and Dominos both went 0-2 over the weekend.

In the championship game, Optimist was coming off of a very impressive win over Wells Fargo. But with a couple of hot bats, and solid pitching down the stretch, it was NMH who came away with the No. 1 finish.

Through three innings of play, it was NMH which held a narrow 3-2 lead. But in the top of the fourth, Optimist rallied for two runs off of one hit. Trey Murphy had a two-RBI single to give his squad the lead, but NMH had other ideas on how the game should end.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, NMH bounced back. They scored two runs on one hit and one Optimist error. Chris Gabrielsen had an RBI in the inning, while Jeff Miller also had an RBI double. Neither team scored in the fifth inning, and NMH sealed the deal in the sixth with two more runs on two more hits. Miller came alive again, this time driving in two more runs on another single, helping propel the formally winless NMH team to a 2013 title.

Ivar Aageson came on and pitched in relief for Optimist, but suffered the loss. Jake Sedahl earned the complete-game win on the mound for NMH.

And at the plate, it was Miller who led NMH, going 3-for-3 with five RBIs. Zach Hernandez also had two hits, while Mike Compton had two hits, Brenden Danielson had one, and Kane Gabrielsen had one. And for Optimist, it was Murphy who set the pace, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs. Aageson also had one hit, while Michael Loftus, Trey Hanson, Dane Jacobson, Tanner Hentschel all had one hit each. Loftus, and Aden Passon also had one RBI each.
