2013 Havre Jamboree: Powerful Glasgow Reds top Havre in finale

Sunday afternoon marked the end of the Havre Jamboree at Legion Field, and the North Stars had the opportunity to play the final game of the weekend. But unfortunately for the North Stars, the Glasgow Reds had no intentions of sticking around for a complete game.

After going 1-3 through the first two days of the Jamboree, the North Stars faced off against Montana’s No. 1 team in the Reds. The Reds made short work of the outing, defeating the North Stars 15-0 in just three innings.

“That is why they are the No. 1 team in the state,” Havre High head coach Danny Wirtzberger said. “They are going to beat a lot of teams like that. They showed they were the superior team at this tournament, and I was glad to see that it was a Montana team that was superior.”

Glasgow put their lineup on display Sunday afternoon.

The Reds combined for 12 hits in the short period of time, including two solo homeruns and three doubles. They also made the outing very tough for Gavin Gunderson, the starting pitcher, and Jase Kato, who came on in relief, as they combined for six walks as well.

And the barrage of runs came early by the Reds, as they took a 7-0 lead after one inning. The trend continued, and Glasgow added three runs in the second, and five more in the third, ending the game by way of mercy rule.

Havre struggled against the Glasgow pitchers, too. Havre didn’t score a run, but did muster up two hits. Tyrell Pierce had a single in the bottom of the second and Dane Warp earned a standup double in the bottom of the third inning. Glasgow’s Gage Legare also struck out six batters.

Overall, the Jamboree was a successful one for the North Stars. They did get one win on the weekend, but they also got a lot of innings in against four very good programs, while showing off Havre and the facilities at Legion field.

“We got a lot of complements from other coaches on our field,” Wirtzberger said. “And our kids worked on the field all weekend long. They complimented us on our community support, and they all want to come back here again. But we got in innings this weekend, and we got to show off our park.”

The North Stars will play again on Wednesday when they host a doubleheader with the Great Falls Hawks at Legion field. Game one is set for 5:30 p.m.
