HHS looks to bring back success on the track

As a new season gets underway, the Havre High boys and girls track teams are well on the way to what will hopefully turn out to be yet another successful season. From top to bottom the Central A Blue Ponies offseason has ran very smoothly. The early spring weather has allowed the Ponies to hold every practice outside thus far, something that was a rarity early on last year. “I am very excited for this year,†Havre high head coach Roger Larson said. “You almost have to knock on wood. It’s been weird not having to go inside and it’s been a shock to everybody. We are already farther along than we were last year and it’s great. We have been very fortunate.†And the Ponies first two scheduled events have already taken place in Cut Bank. The Ponies were able to make the trips with no cancellations. And after last year's start, that too has given the Ponies a better start to their season than last year, when the first few meets were canceled due to spring storms. “It’s always nice to start things at one of these smaller meets,†Larson said. “It’s just a nice, relaxing way to start the season. There isn’t a lot of pressure, it’s still a track meet the kids aren’t overwhelmed with Class AA or other Class A schools.†This season the Ponies should find strength in numbers. As of now, the Ponies have 80 kids out for track. The total may still fluctuate early on, but it is a vast improvement on last year's 65 kids to start. “Those are numbers that we can use at divisionals as well as every track meet before that,†Larson said. “It doesn’t take first and second place finishes to win, it takes third and fourth place finishes as well as squeaking in a few points where you don’t expect it.†Making up the Ponies boys girls track team as of now will be Garrett Aguillard, Kade Barsotti, Ty Bauer, Jim Beamer, Jaye Ceynar, Katie Christianseon, Matt Cole, Danielle Coronado, Joey DeVries, Will DeVries, Maurissa Dionne, Garrett Dolezal, Jordyn Easttick, Lexi Eirdam, Mathew Emge, Stephen Emge, Sammy Evans, Desmond Fialkosky, Evan Flathers, Jordie Gilbert, Dakota Rose Greshack, Tyson Gruber, Matt Hanley, Madison Hanson, Karla Hellegaard, Kody Hickman, Thurmon Holdsclaw, Chazley Hulett, Brokke Jappe, David Jefferey, Drew Kafka, Rachel Karnauskes, Patrick Kinniburgh, Paul Kinniburgh, Mikell Kinsella, Marlee Kirchgasler, Marc Klimas, Tyson Kultgen, Colter Lairy, Chasun Law, Jesse Lieberg, Jake Lilletvedt, Kolton Lodge, Mersades Lodge, Cole Molyneaux, Robbie Mooney, Andrea Moore, Spencer Morkrid, Kendall Murie, Jake Myers, Karlee Myers, Jennifer Nordgvien, Trent Nystrom, Alicia O’Leary, Bryant O’Leary, Alexia Olson, Shelby O’Neil, John Perrodin, Chance Pitkanen, Zach Plum, Larissa Price, Greg Rhines, Michael Richards, Madison Ruff, Lauren Scofield, Paige

Havre High senior Karla Hellegaard flies through the air during a long jump competition at the 2009 Havre Invitational. The Ponies have started a brand new season of track and field, with good numbers and a new track surface at the Havre Middle School track. HHS will host three meets this year, including the 2010 Lions Havre Invitational on April 17.
Sedahl, Sadie Seidel, Mindy Smith, Zach Smith, Alexia Stingley, Corderro Strickland, Jeff Thibodeaux, Dolan Tuss, Derek VanDessel, Ashlynn VanVoast, Courtlan Vukasin, Layne Waid, Emily Waters, Colton Wedding and Sawyer Zugel. And highlighting the Ponies' returning athletes on the boys side is sophomore Kultgen who is the only returning state qualifier. Kultgen will run both the 100 and 200-meter sprints. Juniors Barsotti and Murie also join the list of key returnees as distance runners. Both Barsotti and Murie will run the 1,600 and 3,200-meter races.
