The memory of a long-time community volunteer and activist — and one of the founders of the Friends of the Library — will be honored at the group’s annual fundraiser this week, a pie social scheduled at the Havre-Hill County Library from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday, Valentine’s Day.

    Raela Hulett, chair of the Friends of the Library Pie Recipe Book Committee, said that, in conjunction with the social, the Friends will release a second printing of “A Slice of Delight,” a pie recipe book first released in 2003 and since sold out. Lane compiled and edited the first edition.

    The new printing: “A Second Helping of a Slice of Delight,” includes Lane’s own strawberry-rhubarb pie recipe along with all  of the other recipes — more than 150 — in the first printing, including more than 25 pages of pie crust and pie topping recipes and pie baking tips.

    It also includes a story about Lane written by Leslie Butler, her daughter, and a history of the library written by retired library Director Bonnie Williamson.

    In her story, Butler said her mother would have been pleased and flattered to be included in the cookbook and at the pie social, one of her favorite events of the year. Butler said Lane would prepare throughout the year to make her signature strawberry-rhubarb pie to be sold at the pie social.

    “My mom read cookbooks like most people read fiction,” Butler wrote. “I can see her now, sitting in her blue chair in the corner of the living room, poring over her latest magazine’s pages of recipes.”

    The pie social and the annual book sale are the primary fundraisers for Friends of the Library.

    Hulett said the money from the fundraisers goes to a variety of activities, including sponsorship of the Winter Adult Reading Program and the  Summer Family Reading Program.

    “In general, we try to support the Havre-Hill County Library in any way we can by working with the Library Foundation and the library director,” Hulett said. “Over the years, we purchased the furniture for the community meeting room, purchased board books for the books for babies program, helped purchase computers and workstations for community use (and have) given money to the Montana Shared Library e-reader program.”

    The pie social features more than 60 homemade pies — sold by the slice — and includes ice cream, coffee and punch for $3.

    The pie recipe book will be available for sale at the library for $15, and can be mailed anywhere by request for an additional $5.
