    Long before 6 p.m., people started coming to the Havre Eagles Club for the chili cook-off sponsored by Eagle Riders. People flocked to help out the Eagle Riders and the Havre High School Key Club which is raising money to support Tia and Candace Kallenberger, sisters who have a disease doctors think might be muscular dystrophy, and Dylan Hendrickson, who is undergoing treatment in Seattle for Hodgkin's lymphoma.     Winter is back in full swing, with significant snow and ice for all of us to battle. That means slippery surfaces, which can be dangerous and costly for homeowners, as well as for their visitors, including their letter carrier. By clearing a path when the snow arrives, accidents can be prevented. We need our customers' help. Letter carriers have hurt their knees or backs, or even suffered broken bones from falls on slippery surfaces.   • Spang in jail awaiting new sentences

    A man who pleaded guilty in 2002 to a charge connected to a 1999 double homicide is in the Hill County jail awaiting sentencing for failing to register as a violent offender and for violating conditions of release in an assault case. Jacob Gary Spang, born in 1981, was in the jail this morning on $35,000 bond in the two cases. District Judge Dan Boucher during the change of plea hearing ordered a presentence investigation and set sentencing for Jan. 27.   • Museum board hears about new building

    The board of the H. Earl Clack Museum heard more about its future location and about websites during its monthly meeting Monday. Elaine Morse, head of the museum foundation board, said she had been going through the Griggs Printing Building on the north end of 5th Avenue to sketch out maps and start planning the move into that location. “There will be lots and lots of work committees,” she said. “It will be a fair amount of time before we are even ready to start transporting our stuff there.” The funding foundation last week... Full story

  • Third provost candidate interviewed

    The third candidate for provost at Montana State University-Northern to go through the open interview process answered questions Monday at 2 p.m. at Hensler Auditorium.   • Three Ponies named Class A All-State

    Now that the 2013 Class A All-State football list is out, the book can officially be closed on the high school football season. The list was released last Friday, and three Havre Blue Ponies were named Class A All-State for the 2013 season, including two repeat performers. Blue Pony sophomore quarterback Dane Warp was named All State for the second straight season, as was senior cornerback Thomas Gruber.   • Harlem starts strong

    The Harlem Wildcats opened the 2013-14 wrestling season looking as strong as ever. The Wildcats placed third at the prestigious Cascade Invitational, scoring 195.5 points. Harlem finished behind Choteau and Fairfield in the 17-team event. The Willdcats, of head coach Lyle Faulkinberry, had five grapplers reach the finals, and they placed 10 wrestlers overall.
