CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTION LIMITS LIKELY TO STICK THROUGH ELECTIONS: Officials say a court decision on whether individuals and political parties can give unlimited amounts of money to state candidates likely won't be made until after the Nov. 4 elections. • US House candidates' energy plans reveal contrasts

    MATTHEW BROWN LISA BAUMANN|Updated Aug 4, 2014

BILLINGS (AP) — Montana's U.S. House candidates claim to offer "all-of-the-above" solutions to the nation's energy problems— a familiar mantra among politicians keen to give equal attention to fossil fuels and renewables such as wind and solar. Yet stark differences in the details of their proposals reveal a wide divide. Republican Ryan Zinke is a staunch fossil fuels advocate who questions humanity's role in climate change. Democrat John Lewis touts the potential for renewables that he says could transform the state's ene... Full story

    John Paul Schmidt|Updated Aug 4, 2014

The 50th Annual Rocky Boy Celebration brought the area's biggest powwow to the Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation powwow grounds Friday through Sunday. The first grand entry for the three-day event was 5:30 p.m. Friday and hundreds of spectators gathered round the grounds to watch the day's dancers circle the color guard. The first songs of the drum groups from around the continent provided background for the prairie chicken, traditional, fancy and other dancers from many nations...

  • What happened to 4-H fair coverage?

    Lois Leeds|Updated Aug 4, 2014
    4

I have always enjoyed the local Hill County fair, now known as the Great Northern Fair, especially when I was a child and involved in 4-H. Now that I am grown up, I still enjoy watching my nieces and nephews with their 4-H projects. This is why I am so disappointed and saddened by your lack of coverage of the recent 4-H doings at the fair. You showed pictures of the derby and gave the results; you gave the results of the Junior Rodeo and the NRA Rodeo. The only 4-H coverage you did was the horse judging, which you missed... Full story

  • Cast of 'Sympathy Jones' was a treat to watch

    Virginia Seigel|Updated Aug 4, 2014

The best $10 bucks I've spent all summer was for the tickets to "Sympathy Jones: The New Secret Agent Musical," directed by Audrey Barger and Angela Pratt. It was wonderfully cast and performed by a tremendously talented group of Havre's youth. Emily Simonson, as Sympathy Jones, secret agent wanna-be, packed a punch. She sang, danced and even did her own stunts! She was counterbalanced by the vivacious and vicious villainess in the most deliciously derelict of dresses — Aria Pratt, as Kitty Hawk. She played a very b... Full story

    Travis Kavulla|Updated Aug 4, 2014

I'm writing to thank the public and the press for following the Public Service Commission's nine-day-long hearing on NorthWestern Energy's proposed acquisition of a dozen dams. The PSC expects to make a decision on this matter in September, and that decision will have consequences decades to come for Montana consumers. There is still time to offer public comment on the deal, and you can do so online at http://psc.mt.gov. The fundamental issue in the proceeding boils down to... Full story

  • Warriors come out to play

    John Paul Schmidt|Updated Aug 4, 2014

The 2014 Rocky Boy All Nation Ultimate Warrior Challenge sent the teams through a grueling relay-style race around Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation Friday. The men, however, had to take the entire course by themselves. First, they were sent on a 2.5-mile run to their horse, which they then had to ride bareback for 4.5 miles. After they completed their ride, they had to run to an archery range, where they had to hit a target or spend 10 arrows trying. Once they were out of... Full story
