  • Has Eagle gets 5 years, rape trial still pending

    A man with a rape trial pending in June was sentenced this morning to five years in state custody for violating conditions of his release for a 2012 charge. Donald Has Eagle, born in 1988, was sentenced for violating conditions of a three-year deferred imposition of sentence imposed after he pleaded guilty to criminal endangerment. He originally was charged with assault with a weapon after a May 7, 2012 incident. The charge was reduced to criminal endangerment in the plea agreement.     Preliminary work is underway on the second phase of a project that is set to, eventually, upgrade U.S. Highway 2 from Havre to the Fort Belknap Agency in Blaine County.     PORTLAND, Ore. — A voting rights lawsuit from members of three American Indian tribes in Montana — including tribes at Fort Belknap in Blaine County — will go forward after a federal judge rejected attempts by state and county officials to dismiss the case. Members of the Crow, Northern Cheyenne and Fort Belknap tribes want county officials to set up satellite voting offices to make up for the long distances they must travel to reach courthouses for early voting or late registration.     Fifteen areas along or on top of Bullhook, which runs through the middle of Havre, need repair or replacement and could cost nearly $3.5 million to revitalize.     BILLINGS — Federal officials say their investigations into drug crimes in the Bakken oil patch have led to the arrests of 11 people linked to a ring that trafficked methamphetamine from southern California.     It is very difficult to adjust to tough times as Chippewa Cree people to have endured the pain and suffering as we did in the last few years. Aren't we over that era yet? We did enough suffering a long time ago before the reservation came about. This stealing and embezzling has indeed affected a huge number of people and especially our children.     Dawn Marie Beeman, 35, passed away unexpectedly Sunday evening, March 23, at her home in Havre, Mont. She was born on Aug. 17, 1978, in Sedro-Woolley, Wash. Dawn survived brain cancer as a young child and remained determined and resilient throughout her life. She grew up in Mount Vernon, Wash.
