USPS collects more than two tons of food in Havre

By Tim Leeds

The Havre postal carriers collected more than two tons of non-perishable food items Saturday in their annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

1,034 pounds of dried goods and 3,303 pounds of canned goods were collected in Havre, for a total of 4,337 pounds. Postal carriers collected donations nationwide to give to food banks and pantries for the needy.

Postal customers wishing to donate put their items into a plastic bag and left them by their mailbox before the normal delivery time. The carriers collected the food along with the normal mail pickup.

This year's collection was slightly behind last year's pickup of more than 4,600 pounds, but was still ahead of the previous year's collection of about 4,200 pounds.

Last year the U.S. Postal Service collected more than 390,000 pounds of non-perishable food in the state, and more than 58 million pounds nationwide.
