McCown joins HDN staff as photographer

Brent McCown of Huron, S.D., has joined the Havre Daily News as staff photographer.

McCown, a journalism graduate of South Dakota State University at Brookings, worked at The Plainsman daily newspaper in Huron for more than two years before accepting a position at the Havre Daily News.

McCown said he wanted to move to Montana for more then a year because he has relatives in Culbertson and Sidney and likes the state's landscape. He said he also likes Havre's proximity to Canada and is looking foreword to making his first trip to Glacier National Park.

McCown said he is an avid sports fan with a particular passion for hockey. He said he is looking forward to an opportunity to photograph Havre's Youth Hockey Program and other sporting events in the area.

History, too, is one of McCown's passion and, when younger, he wanted to be a history teacher.

In his free time, McCown said he enjoys a variety of outdoor activities including fishing, camping, and hunting.

McCown said he plans on remaining in photography and just wants to be the best photographer he can be.

"I learn something new every day," he said. "When I stop learning, it's time to give up."

McCown said he hopes to be able to stay at the Havre Daily for at least four or five years.

"All events are new the first year," he said, adding that news photography is a learning process that improves every year.

McCown said he is always looking for new and creative ways to take pictures and he is looking forward to meeting a working with people in Havre.

"Every picture is a little piece of history," he said. "Even if it's just something that ends up in a family's photo album, it's important to them and I need to do my best for them."
