Obie, Wagner lead Ponies after day one

By Tiffany L. Rehbein

WHITEFISH Lisa Wagner was in second place overall after the first 18-hole day at the State A golf tournament at the Whitefish Lake Golf Club on Tuesday.

The senior fired an 84 and is on-track for an All-State finish. She must finish in the top 10 to qualify.

"I am really pleased with how she's golfing," Havre coach Keith Evenson said.

The Pony girls are in seventh place overall with a 417.

Julie Wagner has a 105, Jessica Sande a 114, Jenni Solomon a 114, and Katie Miller a 129.

The girls' goal to finish in the top five at state is not out of reach, Evenson said.

"Julie is also playing well," Evenson said. "If the girls have any kind of day (Wednesday) they should finish well."

Nick Obie fired a 73 on Tuesday and was in third place overall.

However, the Ponies struggled with the course, which is not a long-driving course, and sit in fifth place with a 324.

"The boys need to improve a little bit," Evenson said, noting that the team wasted a lot of shots trying to hit the ball long.

"They need to play smart," Evenson said.

Troy Toner shot a 79, Jason Johnstone an 84, Kyle Sheppard an 88, and Kevin Harada an 89.

With 18 holes to be played today, everyone needs to focus on consistency, Evenson said.

Miles City, the Eastern Division champion is in first place on the girls' side with a 365. Seven-time defending state champion Whitefish is second with a 371.

On the boys' side, Whitefish and Dillon are tied with a 309. Billings Central, Lewistown, and Polson are second, third, and fourth.
