The third canine school search of the year was held yesterday morning at Havre High School, the Havre Middle School and the S.U.N.S. Alternative program.
Superintendent Kirk Miller said no contraband material was found at any of the schools. He said the searches, conducted under procedures outlined by the Havre Public Schools Board of Trustees, are accomplishing exactly what the board desired, which is to eliminate drugs, alcohol and firearms in the school environment.
Miller said this is the fewest alerts any of the searches have found. He said Tanya Godfrey, the canine handler from Interquest Detection Canines, said this is not uncommon; as the students realize throughout the year that possession of contraband materials is not allowed, the number of incidents decreases.
Miller said there were no alerts at the alternative school yesterday, two at the middle school and three at the high school. He said the alerts were from residual odors, with no contraband present. In two of the alerts at the high school, he said, it was as simple as the students having had Tylenol in their lockers a few days before the search.
