Blue Pony golf approaches State A tournament

Behind dual first-place finishes at the Central A divisional golf tournament on Saturday, the Havre Blue Pony golf team is in action at the State A golf tournament today and tomorrow.

The 36-hole tournament is being played at the Whitefish Lake Country Club.

The Havre boys' team Nick Obie, Jason Johnstone, Troy Toner, Kevin Harada, Kyle Sheppard are definite favorites at the tournament.

The boys golfed their way to a 333-point victory at the divisional tournament, and are the highest-finishing team returning to state. The sophomore-based team placed third at state last season.

Obie and Johnstone, who have been gold medalists more than once this season, could also vie for the top individual spot at state.

The Billings Central Rams and Belgrade Panthers could also be tough at state.

The Rams, who boast three freshmen, defeated the Ponies in head-to-head action earlier this season. The Panthers placed second at divisional.

The Pony girls were the surprise of the divisional tournament. Hitting the ball well, the girls upset the field and placed first with a 427.

Lisa Wagner and Jessica Sande tied for the gold medal at the tournament, firing a 95.

Julie Wagner placed in the top 10 and Katie Miller and Jenni Solomon finished in the top 20.

The Whitefish Bulldogs would have to be the definite favorites, having won seven-straight titles. Golfing on their home course could be advantageous also.

Miles City placed first at divisional from the Eastern Division.
