When she took an early 50 meter lead, it looked as if no one could catch her.
And no one did.
As a matter of fact, Jennie Peterson ended up catching three different racers in the 3,200 meters and lapping them before crossing the finish in 12:00.92 at the 18th Annual Top 10 track and field meet held at the Glasgow High School track on Tuesday.
The meet featured more than 270 athletes from Classes A, B, and C. They hailed from towns beginning at Havre and heading east and southeast in Montana.
It was Peterson's third-fastest time of the season, which she posted on the windy and sometimes blustery track.
Teammate Jenna Baltrusch, a freshman, finished the race in second place with a personal-best time of 12:33.41.
Baltrusch also set a personal-best time of 5:41.5 in the 1,600 meters, a race in which she placed fourth.
Peterson was second in the race, clocking in at 5:38. She improved on both distance times from last season at the same meet.
Junior Brent Finneman set a personal-best time of 11.07 in the 100 meters. He was seven-hundreths of one second off the meet record.
Finneman was followed across the finish line by his teammate, freshman Steve Heberly, who also set a personal-best time of 11.25.
Finneman won the 200 meters handily with a time of 23.44.
Junior LaShae Michels won the long jump by less than an inch with a leap of 16 feet 3/4 inches.
Michels finished second in the triple jump, leaping a season-best 34-7 1/4.
Erin Patera, a senior, placed sixth in the triple jump with a season-best leap of 31-6 1/2.
Melissa Haymaker tied her personal-best discus throw at 100 feet four inches. She placed fifth at the meet.
Alyssa Matter placed fifth in the 100 with a time of 13.22.
Jake Dusek placed second in the triple jump, leaping 41-9 1/2. He also placed third in the long jump with a jump of 19-9.
Jesse Suek placed fifth in the discus with a throw of 140-9.
The Havre boys' 400-meter relay, the quickest in the Class A, won the event with a time of 44.34.
The girls' 400-meter relay placed third with a time of 52.28.
Other key highlights:
Malta's Mariah Guilfoyle set a new meet record of 14.9 in the 100-meter hurdles. The former record was held by her and set in 1999.
Guilfoyle placed first in four different events 100, 200, 100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles and was a member of the relay team.
The Malta girls placed first in seven-of-17 events. LeeAnn Pekovitch won the discus and shot put for the M-Ettes.
Only three different Class C schools finished in first place. Tyler Viste of Nashua won the boys' 400 and Jed Kirkland of Nashua won the boys' 1,600.
Brooke Buerkle of Plevna won the girls' 800, Dusti Bartnes of Westby won the girls' high jump, and Lexi Leininger of Westby won the girls' triple jump.
Ryan Rogenes of Class B Glasgow won the 110 hurdles (15.16), 300 hurdles (40.67), and the long jump (20-11 3/4.
Class A Glendive boys placed first in five different events.
Class A Sidney girls placed first in three different events, and placed second in seven events. The Eagles are loaded in the 300 hurdles, where they placed 2-3-4 in the event.
