Barbershop chorus sets benefit concert

By Ron VandenBoom

An evening of old west memories is the promise of the Bull Hook Bottoms Barbershop Chorus when it presents Get Along Little Doggies a musical saga of an old west trail ride from Laredo, Texas to Laredo, Montana.

Get along little doggies will be told in the words and music of the old west, said Bob Nieuwenhuyse, assistant director of the chorus.

The chorus also will don bandanas, cowboy hats, and other western doodads to enhance the authenticity of its performance.

We hope to take everyone back to the old west, Nieuwenhuyse said.

Also making a guest appearance in the show will be the Butte Hill Betterment Society a quartet out of Great Falls.

Nieuwenhuyse said the chorus has traditionally put on a show in the fall of the year to raise funds for charity.

All our funds are directed toward charity work, Nieuwenhuyse said. Predominantly Heart Spring, which is the barbershop harmony singers charity project.

Heart Spring is an institution, located in Wichita, Kansas, where children with speech and hearing defects are aided through singing, explained Nieuwenhuyse.

Bullhook Bottoms Barbershop Chorus will hold their first show at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, in the Chinook High School auditorium.

They will follow up on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 8 p.m. in the Havre High School auditorium with a second performance.

The cost will be $6 for adults and $4 for students and children. Children under 6 are free and a special family rate of $15 will be available.

Anyone interested in joining the chorus is invited to attend a practice on Thursday nights at 7:30 p.m. at Van Orsdel Methodist Church.
