They went through 14 games unbeaten until last weekend as the defending state champion Blue Sky Eagles fell to Highwood 35-12. The Mountaineers used a 21-point third quarter to get the job done.
Blue Sky scored first as Eric Marshall rushed from 30 yards out. Highwood answered, going up 7-6 at the end of one.
The Mountaineers scored first in the second quarter, going up 14-6, but the Eagles answered as Joey Stuart caught a 30-yard pass from Justin Simenson. At the half Highwood led 14-12.
It was all Highwood in the third quarter as the Mountaineers rattled off 21 unanswered points.
Rocky Boy picked up its second win of the season as it downed Brady 44-20.
The first Stars score was a 33-yard run by Nathan Meyers, followed by a brother combination of Darrell and Dustin SunChild. Dustin found older brother Darrell on a 32-yard pass play. The Stars final score off the first quarter came as Jesse Poolaw ran the ball in from 39-yards away. At the half Rocky Boy led 19-7.
The Stars scored only once in the third quarter as Meyers again found the end zone, this time on a 22-yard run from the line of scrimmage.
Rocky Boy lit up the scoreboard in the fourth quarter, as well, with three scores.
The first touchdown came from one yard out as Poolaw found the end zone. Bob Caplette ran the ball 38 yards for a touchdown and Darrell Sunchild scored from his defensive position as he ran back an intercepted pass 30 yards.
Rocky Boy head coach Rick Sunchild said they have been going back to basics and running the ball straight up the middle. Sunchild said his players have been doing some great blocking and running.
Weve been taking the ball and going right up the middle, occasionally on the outside and just letting our blocking and our backs do the rest, Sunchild said.
Two wins in two weeks is a huge confidence builder, Sunchild said. At the beginning of the season, Sunchild said, his players doubted their ability to put points of the board. Once they scored a few touchdowns, they knew they could do it.
They came out to play right from the first quarter. There is nothing fancy and we would be happy with four or five yards and march the ball down the field, Sunchild said.
Next up for the Stars is J-I and Sunchild said they have their work cut out.
Power blasted Big Sandy on Friday night 36-8.
The first score of the game came in the second quarter as Power scored and led 6-0 at the half. The Pirates added 16 more points to the board in the third quarter to lead 22-0. The Pioneers only touchdown came in the fourth quarter as Mace Mangold reeled in an 18-yard pass from Arron Meyers. Meyers also hooked up with Seth Davidson on the two-point conversion but that was all the offense the Pioneers could muster.
Box Elder and Hays-Lodgepole clashed this weekend, with the Bears spoiling the Thunderbirds homecoming by taking the close, but high scoring game, 56-54. Only the score was made available.
Box Elder assistant coach Chris Handley said the T-Birds scored late and tried a two-point conversion to tie the game, but the Box Elder defense held them short.
The win gives the Bears their first victory on the season while Hays-Lodgepole stays winless on the season.
