Big Sandy collects first win

By Rob Everingham

BOX ELDER The assistant got one from the head coach this weekend as Box Elder and Big Sandy clashed in Class C eight-man football action.

Last years Big Sandy head coach and current Box Elder coach Dave Nelsons Bears fell to the Pioneers Saturday 27-12.

New Big Sandy head coach Scott Chauvet said that after being under Nelson last year his team got away with one, after the Bears showed the Pioneers some unexpected things in the first half of the football game.

Neither team scored in the first quarter leaving the game up in the air. But in the second the Pioneers found the end zone as Mace Mangold caught an eight-yard pass from Aaron Myers for the score.

Big Sandy converted two fourth downs on its drive for the first score of the game. Box Elder got the ball back as time expired in the first half with Big Sandy on top 7-0.

The Pioneers struck first in the second half when Daniel Weaver came from his back position and rumbled 20-yards into the end zone for the score, lifting Big Sandy up to an 14-0 lead.

Box Elder cut the score back down as Brandon Gopher came out of the back field and ran the needed 25-yards for the score. The Bears failed on their two-point conversion leaving Big Sandy up 14-6.

Big Sandy struck again in the third as Seth Davidson ran the ball in from short yardage and Chauncy Terry made good on his third point-after of the day and the Pioneers led 21-6.

In the fourth quarter, it was Box Elder who found its way into the end zone first. Wade Colliflower ran the ball in from two yards out to cut the Big Sandy lead down to 21-12. A wet field led to a slip on the Bears two-point try. That was it for the Bears on offense.

The Pioneers also scored once in the fourth as Davidson rushed for his second score of the day. The Bears did have a bright spot as they got in and blocked Terrys attempted point-after.

Both teams came in without a win and Big Sandy moves to 1-2 on the season while Box Elder remains winless at 0-2.

Chauvet said the Bears did some things that threw his team off guard in the first half, but said he was pleased with how his team regrouped at halftime and came out and got the job done.

We needed a win under our belts, Chauvet said.

Chauvet said Box Elder played a great game and he said he knows with Nelson at the helm, the Bears will beat some people.

Nelson said it was a good football game and his team played well. Nelson added that his team needs to get more consistent and they did not capitalize on Big Sandy mistakes and they need to cut down on mistakes of their own.

It was a great close game, Nelson said, and his team had their chances.

They (Big Sandy) get the credit, Nelson said, they beat us fair and square this Saturday.
