Council changes codes to comply with state

By Martin J. Kidston

The Havre City Council gathered Tuesday night in a brief session to hear the final reading on two recent revisals to city ordinance codes.

Ordinance number 834, the Uniform Plumbing Code, was amended and renumbered to accord with the more updated state codes governing plumbing regulations.

City Engineer Ron Bastin said such codes are now state governed, and the citys codes, which were outdated, need to be refined.

Councilwoman and Ordinance chairwoman Emily Mayer-Lossing said the committee has been revising codes and making changes to the little things that dont really pertain anymore.

For example, the plumbing code said it was OK to use vitreous clay pipes, Lossing said. But such pipes are known to disintegrate, and although we dont use them anymore in Havre, the code regarding plumbing had to be updated.

A second ordinance code, number 835, pertaining to the Building Technical Code, the Uniform Mechanical Code and the Uniform Sign Code, were also amended as necessary. The code now complies with the state code governing such regulations.

Were more or less adopting state codes, Lossing said.

The town meeting concerning long-range planning, originally slated for July 5, has been changed to July 19. The next city council meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 6, at 8 p.m.
