POPLAR The Chinook Sugarbeeters stayed perfect on the season last weekend as they drilled Poplar 49-6.
The Beeters got on the board in the first quarter as quarterback Michael Maddox ran the ball 11 yards into the end zone for the touchdown.
Kyle Butcher also got on the board in the first quarter as he scored from five yards out. A successful two-point conversion put Chinook up 14-0. Still in the first quarter, Maddox hooked up with Mason Roseberry on a 22-yard passing play that found the end zone to extend the Chinook lead to 20-0 at the end of one.
In the second, Mark Liddle scored from the defensive side of the ball as he picked up a Poplar fumble and ran it back seven yards.
Also, in the second quarter, Maddox again hooked up with one of his wide receivers. This time it was Justin Friede who hauled in the 34-yard Maddox pass.
Beck also got a score for the Beeters in the second quarter from 11 yards away on a run. At halftime the Beeters led 42-0.
The Indians only touchdown came in the third quarter as they broke free on a 65-yard running play for a score. The Chinook special teams came through, though, and blocked Poplars point after attempt.
In the fourth, Chinook made it into the end zone one more time as Zinn rushed the need five yards and pushed the Beeters lead to 49-6.
Chinook had 365 total offensive yards with 237 rushing and 128 passing. The Chinook defense held Poplar to just 90 total offensive yards and all of those yards came on the ground.
Chinook head coach Scott Friede said they had some things to work on when they came into this game and they got those things accomplished. The big thing was to cut down on penalties and the Beeters did a great job on that, said Friede.
Friede said his starters only played until halfway through the second quarter. He said he was very pleased with the younger athletes and how they played.
Chinook has one of the biggest tests of the season this weekend as it faces Malta. The last three times the two teams have met they have all been at Malta and the Mustangs have won all three.
This year the game is in Chinook with the Mustangs coming in ranked No. 2 in the state and the Beeters ranked No. 9.
As for being ranked No. 9, Friede said, his team still has a lot to do and he said the pressure is on the Mustangs this weekend to keep their high ranking.
