The Havre Blue Ponies will kick off its 1999 season Friday night at Blue Pony Stadium when they meet District 2B foe Glasgow Scotties.
Senior Ricky Brown, 5-10, 170 pounds, will lead the team from the quarterback position. He will be looking for connections to senior wide receiver Nate Baltrusch as well as connections on the ground.
Those ground connections include junior running back Brent Finneman and sophomore Kevin Harada, both of whom looked solid in preseason practice, second year head coach Dan Olson said.
A lot of players are learning new positions this fall, Olson said. For example, in the defensive secondary, three players are swinging three different positions.
Havre won the league title last season with an 8-2 overall record and lost to the Sidney Eagles, 35-21, in the semifinals to close out its 1998 season.
Glasgow, on the other hand, finished 2-6 last season under first year head coach Chuck Syverson. However, the Scotties lost only two seniors to graduation.
Senior Michael Falcon looks to get the start at quarterback for the Scotties. All-league senior Ryan Rogenes is back as well as senior fullback Bret Clampitt. In grades 10-12, the Scotties have only 22 football players.
Olson scouted Glasgow last Saturday.
They looked better than last year, Olson said. Havre defeated Glasgow last season. I think were on the right track to where we need to be.
The home opener will begin at 7:30 p.m. with the Havre High School booster club will provide a concession stand.
