The 1999 Havre Festival Days, despite a myriad of weather changes, was another rounding success for its organizers a fitting tribute to the theme A Century of People and Progress.
And if you couldnt find something to do, you must not have left your living room. The celebration held something for everyone from the start with the Havre High School homecoming game kickoff to the close of the 48-hour softball tournament. From parades to art shows to car shows to comic book shows, there was no end to the offerings for the community and visitors alike.
Even amidst a chilling fall rain, the enthusiasm couldnt be dampened.
For Havreites, one of the most exciting things to see was the life brought back into the downtown area. The hub of the community was abuzz. Vendors selling their wares, stores with doors open wide, and people getting a good look at Havres best side community spirit.
And while all this fun and entertainment seemed like it went off without a hitch, it wasnt by happenstance. From the Festival Days committee chairwomen, Teresa Miller and Tammy Nelson, to the hundreds of other volunteers throughout the weekend, it took some selfless dedication and determination to make it look so effortless.
These people deserve our gratitude and admiration.
And wouldnt you like to see more of that life brought to the streets of Havre throughout the year? A few more street fairs with arts and crafts and entertainment would breathe new life into the center of our city.
But these things dont happen by themselves and the people already dedicated to celebrations like the Great Northern Fair and Festival Days, not to mention the Christmas holiday festivities, are being stretched pretty thin.
So if you enjoyed the life brought to the city last weekend, make an effort to thank those who gave so much of themselves. Then take a hard look at what you could do yourself and then get up off the couch and do it.
We all benefit.
