High school rodeo team completes two weeks of action with big finishes

Havre athletes Doug Kallenberger and Todd Owens shone at the Lewistown rodeo, the first for the Havre High school rodeo team. The team opened its 1999 season at Lewistown Aug. 21-22.

Owens won the bareback event Sunday with a 61. Kallenberger, who also competes on the Havre Blue Pony football team, placed fourth in the saddle bronc scoring a 59.

Kellie Schmitt of Chinook placed sixth in the barrel racing competition clocking in at 18.39 and fifth in the breakaway roping with a 7.69.

Chinooks Morgan Strauser clocked in at 17.84 in the steer wrestling, good for a seventh place finish. Rylee Strauser, also of Chinook, finished in the No. 3 position in the breakaway event with a 3.82. She also grabbed an eighth place finish in the goat tying with a 10.4.

Jestin Brown of Chinook finished in the No. 2 spot in the bull riding with a score of 70. Jacob Brown of Chinook grabbed an eighth place finish with a 64 in the same event.

The team traveled to Winnett the following weekend to take part in the annual high school rodeo held in central Montana.

Saturday, Morgan Strauser, with a slower throw-down time, moved up in the finishing ranks in the steer wrestling event, he filled the No. 4 position with a time of 28:07.

In the pole bending event, which was eerily absent of Havre and area finishers, Rylee Strauser pulled in a third place finish in 21:48, Jessica McIntosh of Havre finished sixth in 21:99 and Kelly Schmitt of Chinook finished in the No. 8 slot in 22:26. McIntosh also placed tenth in the barrels in 18:63.

Schmitt went on to finish fifth in the barrel racing, clocking in at 16:04.

First place finishes abounded at Winnett. Jestin Brown took home the crown in the bareback riding event with a score of 53 and improved his mark in the bull riding with a first place score of 68.

Doug Kallenberger ran away with the top prize in the saddle bronc division both days with a 69 Saturday and 67 Sunday. He then teamed with Matt Brewer in the team roping event to nab a second place finish in 16:21. Sunday, the teammates tallied a fifth place mark in 32:28.

Kallenberger won the average saddle bronc round and the teaming team roped a first place finish in the team roping average round.

Sunday, Schmitt placed seventh in the pole bending with a time of 22:07 and seventh in the barrels clocking a time of 18:36. Clinton Pankratz of Chinook tallied a second place finish with a 63 in the saddle bronc event.

Brown placed in the No. 7 position with a 62 in the bull riding but managed to finish No. 1 in the average of the event.

Denali Solomon, who did not compete in Lewistown, notched a sixth place finish in the barrels with a time of 18:21.

McIntosh tallied a tenth place finish in the goat tying in 11:42.
