With a craving for sports and a competitive attitude, University of Montana graduate Tiffany Rehbein has signed on as the new sports editor for The Havre Daily News.
Born in Sidney, she attended Richey High School and graduated in 1993. Originally, her sights had been set on teaching, but a fourth grade experience, she recalls, offered her an alternate focus.
In the fourth grade, my teacher said I was a good writer, Rehbein said. In college, I studied English literature, but I wasnt finding a job. I decided to go into something more worthwhile, and went for my BA in journalism.
With a degree in print journalism, Rehbein worked part time at the Missoulian as a sports writer, where fellow reporters sided as her mentor and guided her journalistic writing skills. But when it came to reporting on sports, Rehbein filled the role with a natural tendency.
Ive always had an interest in sports, and Ive always been involved in it myself, Rehbein said. Athletes are nice people, not unlike myself. They are competitive like me.
Replacing Kent Dolezal as The Havre Daily News sports editor, Rehbein hopes to use her competitive edge and Class C pride to draw focus upon overlooked athletes.
I really like the Class C, she said. There are some great athletes there who are often overlooked by scouts because theyre in the Class C division.
Stemming from a Class C school herself, Rehbein hopes to write a sports column focusing on talented Class C athletes, giving them the recognition she feels they deserve.
Rehbein said she was pleased to land the position of sports editor at The Daily News, and added that she is no stranger to the community.
Ive been here off and on for 10 years, she said. I have friends in Gildford and Chinook. Ive found a church the Assembly of God and the whole town is super friendly.
Rehbein said her long-term goals will direct her towards the magazine industry. If all goes as planned, she would like to write for Christian Magazine. As for now, however, she hopes to excel in her position as sports editor, and use the position as a starting point for the future.
