Phyllis Spitzer, 79, of Great Falls, a homemaker, died on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009, at her home, due to natural causes.

Phyllis was born April 3, 1929, in Esmond, N.D., and was raised and educated in Devil’s Lake, N.D. She married Wilmar Smith Sr. In 1945 in Devil’s Lake, N.D.; they later divorced. She then married Ted Spitzer in 1993, in Havre. Phyllis worked in the housekeeping field for many years, but enjoyed staying home and caring for her family. She enjoyed working in her flower garden, as well as fishing and crafts. Surviving her are daughters, Claudine Gretner- Reid of Las Vegas, Nev., and Dixie Halcro of Great Falls; sons, Wilmar Smith of Cottonwood, Calif., and Roger Smith and Gearald Smith, both of Great Falls; sisters, Alice Mapes of Havre and Joyce of Devil’s Lake, N.D.; a brother, Dale Haugen of Havre; 12 grandchildren; and 14 greatgrandchildren. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Spitzer, who died in 1993.
