With spots in the Class A state track meet on the line, the Havre High boys and girls track teams were in Belgrade on Saturday for the Central A Divisional track meet.
Not only did the Belgrade Panthers host the meet, they also ran away with it, capturing the team titles for both the boys and girls teams with 199 points and 172 points, respectively.
The Havre High boys ended up a distance second with 102.5 points, and Browning came in third with 100.33.
On the girls side of things, Lewistown finished in second place, 72 points behind the Panthers. Livingston came in third with 95 points and the Ponies came in fourth with 72.33, about 23 points shy of capturing a trophy.
“I am really proud of our boys team,” HHS head coach Mark West said. “We knew coming into the meet that it was going to be really wide open on the boys side, and as it turned out, it was. Luckily, we were strong enough in certain areas to get second place.
“But man, at the end it was getting very close because Browning was sneaking up on us,” he added. “And at one point, they gained about 30 points in two events, and it looked like they might overtake us for awhile. But we gained enough points late in the meet to hang on which is a great achievement for us.”
Despite missing out on a trophy, West was also proud of the effort from his girls team.
“As for the girls, I thought that they did just about as well as they possibly could,” he said. “We could have done a little better in a few areas and possibly picked up a few more points, but we just had some tough luck with injuries and things like that, and maybe if we could have been healthier it might have turned out a little bit differently.”
Robert Brooks led the way for the HHS boys with first-place finishes in both the 1600-meter race and the 3200-meter race. The wins in the distance races gave the Ponies the spark they needed early in the meet.
Cody McLean also had a great day for the Ponies with a first-place finish in the pole vault. McLean defeated highly touted Evan Stokken from Lewistown in the event. McLean also surprised many by finishing third in the javelin throw, an event he hasn't placed in all season.
“Robert Brooks had a really great day for us,” West said. “He got us started off with some big points and he just had a great all around meet. He has been terrific for us all season long and on Saturday it was no different.
“Cody McLean also had an outstanding day for our team,” he added. “I mean for him to go out there and beat the Stokken kid from Lewistown, who is a phenomenal athlete was just great to see. And then for Cody to place third in the javelin when we really needed some points was just huge, those points really helped get us into second place,”
Other Havre boys who qualified for the state meet by finishing in the top five were Kyle Finneman, who finished fifth in the 100-meter dash and third in the 200-meter dash; Kyle Rummel, who was fifth in the 200-meter dash; Derek Verploegen, who was third in the 400-meter dash; Andy Keim, who ended up fifth in the 800-meter run; Marcus Campbell, who took fifth in the 3200-meter run; Jason Mudrow, who was fifth in the 300 hurdles; and Ryan Horne, who took third in the long jump and fourth the high jump.
Rounding out the list of state qualifiers were Jack Teske, who placed fourth in the triple jump, as well as Grayson Windsor and Paul Jensen who finished third and fourth, respectively in the shot put. The HHS boys also won the 400-meter relay and took second in 1600-meter relay.
“We are taking 13 boys to state, which is a really good number,” West said. “Of course, things will be tougher at state, but it's going to be a very good experience for our younger athletes.”
For the Blue Pony girls, the star of the weekend was junior Lena Suek. Suek won the discus throw as well as the javelin. Suek also finished second in the shot put. Suek's victory in the discus was extra special because her throw of 130-07 feet set a new Central A record.
“Lena had a phenomenal day,” West said. “She was amazing like she has been all year long. She finally got to about where she wanted to be in terms of the distance on her throws, and she did a fantastic job.”
Other solid individual performances included Meredith Hanson, who finished fourth in the mile and fifth in the two-mile; Carmen Neuens, who was fourth in the high jump and fifth in the triple jump; Casea Pollington, who ended up second in the high jump; Hannah Wells, who took third in the 100-meter hurdles; Tricia Samson, who finished fifth in the 300-meter hurdles; and Kelsey West, who took fifth in the 100-meter dash.
The HHS girls also took third in the 400-meter relay and fourth in the 1600-meter relay.
The Havre High boys and girls who finished in the top five will now move on to the 2006 Class A state track meet, which gets under way in Butte on Friday afternoon.
