Even a record setting day by Kourtney Danreuther was not enough to secure a Big Sandy sweep of the team titles at the Northern C Divisional track meet in Great Falls on Thursday as the Chester/Joplin-Inverness girls had just enough to overcome another unbelievable performance by Danreuther.
The Big Sandy boys were able to hold up their end of the bargain with a runaway victory over Augusta and Centerville. The Pioneers racked up 104 points giving them first place by 49 points over second place finisher Augusta with 55. Centerville finished in third place with 40 points respectively.
The Pioneers were hoping to sweep both teams titles but the C/J-I girls had other plans taking home first place with a slim victory over Big Sandy as the Hawks scored 94 points to lock up first place. The Pioneers came in second 11 points behind with 83 and Belt came in a distant third place with 39 points.
Even though her team wasn't able to capture the team title, Kourtney Danreuther still stole the show with wins in five different events. Danreuther won the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, the 400-meter dash, the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. In addition to winning five different events, Danreuther continued her recent trend of record breaking performances as she set Northern C Divisional records in the 200-meter dash, the 400-meter dash and the 300 hurdles.
Unfortunately, Danreuther's record-setting day was not enough to overcome C/J-I and standout Hawk athlete Brianne Wolfe. Not to be overshadowed by Danreuther, Wolfe put had quite a day as well as she won the 800-meter run, the 1600-meter run and finished second in the 400-meter dash. Wolfe was also the anchor of the C/J-I 1600-meter relay team that cruised to a first place finish.
Daina Kolstad also had a solid day for the Hawks even though she did not win any individual events she finished second in the 100 hurdles, third in the 300 hurdles and second in the 100-meter dash. She was also a part of the Hawks winning 1600-meter relay team.
Brittany Kolstad also had a nice day for the Hawks with fourth place finishes in the 200-meter dash and the 300 hurdles as well as a fifth place finish in the 100 hurdles.
Other solid individual performances came from Kourtney Wendland of North Star who won the Javelin, Desirae O'Neil of Big Sandy, who won the high jump and Crystal Roseberry, who finished second in both the long jump and the triple jump.
Other girls that qualified for state include Big Sandy's Shirsteen Cline in the 400-meter dash, C/J-I's Lindsey Oraw in the 800-meter dash, Big Sandy's Morgan Darlington in the mile, and North Star's Natasha Dyrland in the shot put. C/J-I's Keyla Briese (long jump), Lexi Lybeck (triple jump) and Molly Brown (high jump) also qualified.
On the boys side Big Sandy ran away from the rest of the field led by Karl Osterman and Kyle Danreuther. Osterman placed in the top three in all three sprint events finishing first in the 400-meter dash, second in the 200-meter dash and third in the 400-meter dash.
Danreuther like his sister also had an outstanding day. Danreuther won both the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles and also finished second to Osterman in the 400-meter dash.
Ryan Pokorny also won the 100-meter dash for the Pioneers and in one of the long bright spots on the day for the North Star Knights Cody Donoven won the javelin.
C/J-I's Caleb Brown won the 800-meter run and finished second in the 1600-meter run. North Star's Alex Chivilicek finished fourth in the pole vault. Lance Brockie of Hays/Lode Pole was fourth in the shot put. Big Sandy's Laurence Jappe was fourth in the javelin and fourth in the 100-meter dash. Big Sandy's Justin Willis was fifth in the 400-meter dash. C/J-I's Cullen McKinley was fifth in the 300 meter hurdles. Chase Pimley of C/J-I finished sixth in the triple jump.
All of the top six finishers will advance to the Class C state track meet next weekend in Butte.
