Kourtney Danreuther had a record-setting day in leading the Big Sandy Pioneers girls track team to a first-place finish at the District 9C track meet Wednesday afternoon at the Havre Middle School track.

The Pioneers were overwhelming favorites to take home the team title, but they received an unexpected challenge from North Star and barely nudged out the victory with 176 points compared to 170 points by North Star. Chinook finished in third with 110 points.

The Big Sandy boys also were expected to take home first-place honors in the meet, but the Pioneers were upset by the North Star Knights, who scored 203 points. Big Sandy came in second with 186 points and Hays-Lodge Pole ended up a distant third with 59 points.

“I am really proud of the way that our kids came out and competed.” North Star head coach Brian Campbell said. “Both teams achieved so much more than I could have ever hoped for them to achieve.

On the girls side, Danreuther has run record-setting times all season, and in her first opportunity to officially set records, she had another impressive performance. She took first in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, the 400-meter dash, the 100-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles, setting District 9C records in all five events.

“Kourtney showed today that she is up their with all the great runners in the state,” Big Sandy head coach Roy Lackner said. “She just runs so well. We have had her competing in the long jump, but people want to see her run, so we put her in the 400. As long as she stays healthy, I don't think there is anybody out there who can beat her.”

Said Danreuther: “It's a great feeling to break those records, because to get them I had to surpass some great athletes. But really, the records don't matter to me that much. I go out there to have fun and to try and just beat my own times.”

Crystal Roseberry also had an outstanding performance for the Chinook girls team with first-place finishes in the long jump and triple jump as well as second-place finishes in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash.

Megan Warren and Natasha Dyrland spearheaded the North Star effort with a pair of standout performances. Warren placed in five events with third-place finishes in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, the discus and the triple jump. She also took second place in the long jump.

Dyrland placed in four events, including a first-place finish in the shot put.

“We got good performances from quite a few of our kids,” Campbell said. “We have such good numbers that we just try to outnumber people. We may not get as many first- and second-place finishes as some other teams, but we get a lot more thirds, fourths, fifths and sixths.”

Besides Danreuther, Big Sandy also got a great performance from Desirae O'Neal, who placed in three events, including a first-place finish in the high jump. Freshman Laci Keller won the discus for the Pioneers.

“I didn't think that we were going to take first in either the boys or girls, but we got just enough for our girls to finish first,” Lackner said. “Desirae O'Neal won the shot put and had a really nice day for us.”

Kourtney was not the only Danreuther to have an outstanding performance. Her brother Kyle led the way for the Big Sandy boys with first-place finishes in the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. Karl Osterman also had quite a day for the Pioneers by taking home first place in the 400-meter dash, the 200-meter dash and finishing second in the 100-meter dash.

Big Sandy's performances were not enough to lead the Pioneers past the North Star Knights, who were led by the standout performance of Cody Donoven. Donoven placed in five events, including a first-place showing in the javelin.

Shane Rice also had a big day for the Knights by winning the 3200-meter run and placing in four other events to help lead the Knights to the team title.

“Shane Rice had a really big performance for us,” Campbell said. “He kind of got us started off with his good finish in the mile and that kind of showed our kids that we could do well and we could compete at a very high level.” North Star had a number of other athletes who contributed to its title, including Branden Melby, who placed in four events, including a first-place finish in the triple jump. Alex Frey won the high jump for North Star.

Meanwhile, Lance Brockie of Hays-Lodge Pole led the Thunderbirds to a third-place finish by winning the shot put and the discus. “We had a lot of good individual performances; we just didn't have that numbers to overtake North Star,” Lackner said. “Districts are all about numbers and we don't have great numbers. But we have great athletes, and when it comes to divisionals and state, it comes down to who has the best athletes. So as long as we can stay healthy, I think we are going to be pretty tough to beat.”

The top six athletes in each event will now move on to the Northern C Divisional track meet in Great Falls on May 18.
