Meal prices at Havre Public Schools will rise in each of the next four years.
The price increases range from 25 to 40 cents each year.
HPS operations director Ric Floren said the price increases are necessary to keep up with rising food costs, adding that he also hopes to add more fresh fruit and vegetables to the meals, using the additional dollars.
“I am pleased to say we have gone 20 years without relying on the general fund” to cover food cost increases, Floren said at Tuesday night's Havre Public Schools board meeting.
Havre students now pay 75 cents for breakfast. The price will go up to $1 next year and will rise to $1.75 by the 2009-2010 school year. Lunches costs for students in kindergarten through fifth grade are now $1.25. By 2009-2010, the meal will cost $2.25. Lunches for grades six through 12 will rise from $1.35 this year to $1.75 next year. In 2009-2010, the cost will be $2.20 per meal.
Adults' meals will also raise due to federal requirements. Now, adults pay $1 for breakfast and $1.75 for lunch. Breakfast will go up to $1.50 next year and rise to $2.25 in 2009-2010. Lunches will go from $1.75 to $3.25 in 2009-2010.
The free lunch program will not be affected by the price change.
