Heading into the ARM Invitational track meet in Whitefish, the question surrounding both the Havre High girls and Havre High boys track teams was not whether the Ponies were talented enough to compete, but more so whether or not they had enough energy and legs to compete.

But in their fourth meet on the road in just six days, the Ponies answered all tests as the HHS girls finished second to host Whitefish and the Havre boys finished third on Saturday afternoon in Whitefish.

“We knew going down to Whitefish that it was going to be interesting to see whether the kids could compete at the same level they have been over the last week or so,” HHS head coach Mark West said. “All of the kids had very tired legs as we got off the bus down there, and all they did was go out and record personal bests or at least do what they have been doing lately.

“I couldn't be more pleased with how the kids did,” he added. “They all went down there and flat-out competed.”

The HHS girls came dangerously close to upsetting Whitefish on Saturday. The host Bulldogs finished the meet with 116 points while the Ponies came in with 103 points.

Havre got its usual stead performance from Lena Suek. The junior captured the shot put, the discus and the javelin to lead the Ponies in points. Carmen Neuens won the long jump with a final leap of 15-1 and finished second in the high jump. Meridith Hanson also won gold for the Ponies with a scintillating performance in the 3200 meters. Hanson captured the longest distance race with a time of 12:47.62. Hanson also finished fourth in the 1600 meters.

“Meridith Hanson ran a great 3200 on Saturday,” West said. “And Lena Suek had a really nice day against some very good throwers.”

The Ponies also got a big boost from their sprinters despite the weary legs. No HHS sprinter could catch Whitefish's Courtney Ferda who won both the 100 and 200 meters. But the Ponies got a fourth-place finish from Kelsey West in the 100 meters, while Mandy Nystrom finished fourth in the 200 meters and second in the 400.

On the boys side, the Ponies also stayed strong despite being a little fatigued because of all the meets in such a short span.

Havre scored 72 points in the meet, which was just three points behind second-place Columbia Falls. Whitefish dominated its own invitational, scoring a whopping 139 points.

“I couldn't be more pleased with how our boys team did this weekend,” West said. “They came and competed at a very high level despite being really tired.

“A perfect example is a kid like Ryan Horne,” he added. “He goes out and places in both the high jump and the long jump. I was really happy with how all our kids competed.”

Havre's sprinters had a solid day led by Derek Verploegen's second-place finish in the 400 meters. Kyle Finneman placed sixth in the 100 meter and Kyle Rummel was fourth in the 200. Cody McLean also helped Havre's cause with a second-place finish in the pole vault.

Distance runners Robert Brooks, Marcus Campbell and Andy Keim also got the Blue Ponies a host of points on Saturday. Brooks won the 3200 meters and finished third in the 1600 meters. Campbell finished fifth in the 3200 and Keim placed second in the grueling 800 meters.

“Robert Brooks had another great day,” West said. “He has just been running great races every week for us and even though his legs were a little tired, he came out and really performed well on Saturday.

“Again, I just can't say enough about how all our kids competed this weekend,” he added. “This was a big mental test for all of our kids and they exceeded all of our expectations this weekend.”

Some of the Havre High boys and girls will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon at the Top 10 meet in Glasgow. On Saturday, Havre will travel to Lewistown for the Lewistown Invitational.
