A city water service line on Center Street near 12th Avenue broke Wednesday, leaving eight homes without service for a few hours in the afternoon.

At first city workers thought the break was related to firefighters flushing fire hydrants earlier in the day, but once they saw the break, they changed their minds.

Matt Pozega said the break occurred in an area of older pipe. He pointed beyond the block to where homes are being served by updated lines.

"They're used to it," he said of the residents who are serviced by the older pipes.

City workers dug down to the pipe, removed the excess water, and had the billiard ball-sized hole patched quickly.

The break was discovered about noon and service was returned by 4 p.m.
