It may have been a little windy at times, but the 2005 Lions Invitational track meet went off without a hitch Saturday afternoon at the Havre Middle School track, and the warm weather produced some outstanding performances on the day.

The Cut Bank girls dominated the meet, easily capturing first-place honors with 96 points. Malta finished a distant second with 66.5 points and the Havre Blue Ponies came in third with 61 points. Chinook finished a solid fourth with 40 points and Class C Chester was sixth with 33 points.

"I was pretty happy with how our girls team finished," said HHS head coach Mark West. "We might have finished a little higher, but we had some girls that weren't able to finish the meet because of the prom. But overall, I think we did pretty well with so much going on."

Indeed, the Ponies got another outstanding day from sophomore Lena Suek. The sophomore not only captured the discus title by more than nine feet, but she also finished third in the javelin and fifth in the shot put. As expected, Chinook's Brittany Williams captured the shot put title with a throw of 38-1.

The Ponies also got a big boost from the likes of Carmen Neuens and Darci Briere. Neuens had an outstanding day in the jumps, finishing in a tie for first in the high jump as well as a strong second in the long jump. Briere, meanwhile, captured the 3200 meter title with an outstanding time of 12:47.

"Lena had a really good day and so did Carmen Neuens," West said. "But I thought we had a lot of good performances from our girls today."

"Kelsey and Cammie West both stepped up and did a really nice job for us," he added. "And we had quite a few kids who had some personal bests today. So all in all it was a pretty good day for us."

Kelsey West did shine for the Ponies with a very solid third-place finish in the highly competitive 100 meter dash. The sprints, however, were dominated by the surprise performer of the day, Browning's Sperry DeRosier. DeRosier captured both the 100 and 200 meters, while Malta standout Roshon Nordlund brought home the 400 meter title.

But in the end, the girls meet belonged to the Cut Bank Wolves and standout Amber Aikens. Aikens captured both hurdle championships and she also won the long jump title by a full foot over Neuens. For good measure, Aikens also easily captured the triple jump title and finished third in the high jump. Her performance was more than enough to lead the Wolves to the team title on Saturday.

Like the Cut Bank girls, the Malta boys also somewhat outclassed the rest of the field Saturday afternoon. But Malta did have to fight it out at the end of the day with Northern B rival Choteau.

The Mustangs captured the team title with 62 points, while the Bulldogs finished second with 54 points. Class A Lewistown was a distant third with 41 points, while the host Havre Blue Ponies finished in a tie for fourth place with Cascade, each with 36 team points.

"I expected a little more out of our boys team this week," West said. "But I think the Chinook meet getting cancelled and missing a full practice on Thursday really put our boys a little behind.

"We still had some good performances in this meet," he added. "But I just felt like we could have done a lot better than we did."

The Pony boys had no individual champions on Saturday but they did get plenty of team points from seniors Scott Robinson and Tom Knudson.

Robinson finished fifth and teammate Ted Wells finished sixth in a huge 100 meter field that included 90 competitors for the preliminary rounds. That meant that in order to make the finals an athlete had to win his individual heat, which both Robinson and Wells did on Saturday morning.

Robinson also came back to finish fourth in the 200. Meanwhile, Knudson placed in both hurdle events, finishing fifth in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles. Big Sandy's Kyle Danreuther was at the head of the field in the 300 meter hurdles, finishing first with a 42.55, which was a full second faster than the rest of his competitors.

"I thought that Tom Knudson would have a pretty good day," West said. "And he did. The hurdles had some really good athletes entered and he did a good job in both."

The Ponies also got a pair of seconds places with Rick Houim in the shot put and Cody McLean in a three-way tie for first in the pole vault. Derek Verploegen also ran well in the 400 meters, finishing third with a time of 55.6.

But the Mustangs had too much balance on Saturday, getting first-place finishes from Kevin Hanson in the 100 meters, Deric Welch in the 110 hurdles, and Jeremy Azure in the high jump. The Mustangs also captured the 1600 meter relay championship.

"Again, I thought our boys team could have had a better day," West said. "We had some things that didn't go our way like dropping the baton in the relay race, and we had a lot of distractions around us.

"But now things are back to normal a little bit," he added. "And we have a big week ahead of us. This was a great meet and everything went really well. But we're really excited about getting on with the rest of our schedule."

Havre's busy week will get started on Tuesday with a dual at Great Falls High. The Ponies will then head to Malta on Thursday for an afternoon invitational. On Saturday, the HHS teams will split up with the boys heading to Butte for the Swede Dahlberg Invitational and the girls to Great Falls for the Optimist Invitational.
